Hetzner Auction or Netcup Root-Server if you want real without colo. Or actually colo with someone like Keyweb or myloc. The rest is gambling.
3 Years Stuck With Contabo – Here's What Actually Happened
Netcup is a good call. They are transparent about what is Root-Server (virtual) and what is Dedicated. I have had both with them, no surprises on the hardware pull.
I've been with Contabo VPS for two years, no complaints at that price. But I knew it was VPS going in. The problem is people who don't know, paying for "dedicated" that's not.
This is why I test backups by deleting things. I also test servers by checking if they exist. lscpu, dmidecode, smartctl. If any of those smell funny, I document and chargeback.
Has anyone actually done a full hardware audit on Contabo's "Dedicated" tier? Like, walked through the BMC and checked the physical inventory?
I have not, TierZcs. Their dedicated prices start around 60 EUR monthly, which is suspiciously low for genuine hardware in Germany. The power alone in a Munich datacenter costs more than that suggests.
Rotterdam. Power in Nuremberg is cheap, hydro. But even there, a real E3 v6 with 32GB and two SSDs has a floor cost. Anything below that floor is virtualised or subsidised by something else.
Nuremberg. The something else is usually oversold Ceph or recycled hardware they're already depreciated. Not illegal, just not "dedicated" as a normal person understands it.
I own 340 domains and host them across too many providers. Contabo's fine for parking pages. Wouldn't run a store on it. Hetzner's fine for real stuff. Wouldn't trust their marketing either way.
Nuremberg. I white-label Hetzner Cloud for some clients. They know it's Hetzner under the hood. The ones who wanted "dedicated" I moved to Leaseweb or actual colo. No drama since.
