As a CS student this makes me angry. We're taught precise terminology for a reason. When industry deliberately breaks it, they're stealing from people who trust language.

Estonia. Language theft is real. "Cloud" meant something specific once. "Dedicated" meant physical. Now they're just sounds that make money.
8-bit forever. At least "64K RAM" still means 65536 bytes. The old standards had integrity because the hardware enforced them.

My dumpster server had 64GB RAM. I knew because I opened it and counted the sticks. Try that with "dedicated resources."
So final practical advice: if buying "dedicated," demand BMC access before purchase. No BMC, no sale.
BMC access or GTFO. That's the rule. Anything less and you're renting a mystery.

BMC or IPMI or Redfish. Some management interface that talks to actual hardware. If they refuse, you have your answer about what the product truly is.
Austin. In my ISP days we'd give colo customers smart hands and remote eyes. They could see their box. Anything less than that visibility is not dedicated, it's just expensive shared.
I'm going to add BMC verification to my backup testing routine. Delete things, check hardware, restore things. Full paranoia.
Thanks all. Going with Hetzner Auction for real, or Kimsufi if I need cheap and honest. Skip the "dedicated" marketing entirely.
