Not Contabo, but I pulled SMART from a GreenCloudVPS "storage" plan once. The virtual disk passed through enough that smartctl worked, but the model string was QEMU HARDDISK. Dead giveaway.
QEMU HARDDISK in smartctl. That's beautiful. I would frame that output.
Does Hetzner's dedicated line show real SMART data? Like, actual Samsung or Intel model strings?

On the auction servers, yes. Real Samsung PM883, real Intel S4510. On the "cloud" obviously not, and I haven't tested their new "dedicated" tier that replaced some of the old SX lines.

The old SX lines were real. I had an SX62 in Nuremberg, genuine Xeon, could BMC into it and see everything. The new naming is confusing by design, I think.

By design or by accident, the confusion benefits them. When customers can't tell the difference, they pay the higher price for the lower product. Standard retail tactic, applied to servers.
In eleven years of ISP work I saw this pattern with consumer broadband too. "Up to 100 Mbps" means anything. "Dedicated server" now means the same. Words without standards.
Has anyone filed an actual complaint with German consumer protection about this? BfArM or similar?

BfArM is the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, samuel_noan. You mean the Bundesnetzagentur or perhaps Verbraucherzentrale. I have not filed, but I have considered it. The problem is proving intent versus sloppy marketing.

Nuremberg. Intent is hard to prove. But "sloppy" doesn't explain the consistent pattern across multiple providers. They all arrived at the same "dedicated resources" language independently? Unlikely.
