Hetzner's crypto discount is actually a volatility trap · Deals & Offers

The routing thing LichunLars mentioned — Level3→Cogent→BitPay — that's not just latency. Those are paid transit paths. Someone's paying for those hops, and it's baked into the spread you see. Rotterdam to Frankfurt is 8ms direct. I wouldn't route crypto through Cogent if I had a choice, but you don'...

'Enterprise-grade' on budget hosts is meaningless · General Discussion

Haswell-EP, launched 2013

Correct. And the v2 stepping is specifically the refresh, still 22nm. We see these in Rotterdam colo resold as "prosumer" by hosts who bought decommissioned hyperscale stock. The honest ones say "vintage compute, priced accordingly." The dishonest on...

'Enterprise-grade' on budget hosts is meaningless · General Discussion

  • Advertised: "dedicated cores"
  • Reality: vCPU pinned to thread, not core, on E5-2680v2
  • Observable via: lscpu, then check stepping against ark.intel.com

As said, we stopped using "enterprise" in 2024. Now we say "datacenter-appropriate" and list the exact hardware generation. D...

Running a production site on a NAT IPv4 box · General Discussion

To be honest, I tested this at OVHcloud for internal tooling. Specs:

  • 1 vCPU, 512MB RAM
  • NAT IPv4 + /64 IPv6
  • 6 months: 2 incidents
  • Stripe webhook rejected CGNAT range
  • LetsEncrypt rate limit on shared IP

As said, fine for hobby. Production? Dry humor: you...

1GB 'budget' now costs what 4GB did in 2019: are we the suckers? · VPS Hosting

- 2019: 4GB DDR4 ECC, ~$4/mo at scale
- 2024: same stick, ~$11/mo equivalent
- 2026: DDR5 shortage plus DDR4 EOL, manufacturers charging premium for "legacy"

As said, providers pass through 60-70% of RAM cost. The rest is power, space, port.

My current stack at OVHcloud:
- 2x EPYC 9654
- 512GB DD...

Registry price caps changing next year · Deals & Offers

Registry price caps changing next year. ICANN contracts up for renewal on three legacy gTLDs, caps lifting January 2027. To be honest, this is bigger than most domain investors realize.

Numbers:
[list]
[*]Current cap: 10% annual increase
[*]Proposed: none for .site, .online, .xyz variants
[*]6-mont...

Valheim dedicated: why my $3 VPS outperforms 'gaming hosts' · VPS Hosting

Hetzner Singapore peers with Singtel and NTT. From Rotterdam I get 160ms, not great for gaming. But for the backup use case JokoNord mentioned, perfect. Geo-redundancy without thinking about it.

I keep meaning to test their Singapore compute for EU-Asia hybrid setups.

That's the record so far in this thread

I keep a local copy of every promo email from our upstream partners, mostly to check if OVHcloud gets mentioned in the small print

Contabo used the same "flash sale" header image for eleven months last year, I only noticed be...
