Nuremberg. And IPv4 is the hidden subsidy. Some providers pack 20 VMs behind one /24 and call each "dedicated" because they get a whole IPv4. The IP costs more than the "server."
I own 340 domains so I know IP costs. Hetzner's 1 EUR per IP is subsidised. Contabo's included IP is definitely subsidised. Nobody's making money on the IP at those prices, so they're making it on density.

This is a very good observation. The IPv4 subsidy explains many pricing mysteries. If the IP is cheap or free, the server must be dense or oversold. No business runs at loss on both.
Following this thread hard. About to buy my first "dedicated" server and now I'm checking everything.
Don't buy yet. Rent a cheap VPS, learn to audit it, then apply those skills before you sign a "dedicated" contract. The skills transfer, the money doesn't if you get scammed.

Shared for a bakery is perfect. This thread's about people who need more and are being sold less. Different problem.

20 years in the trenches. The trench is "dedicated" meaning "not shared with other customers" but still "shared hardware" via VMs. Legal, maybe. Honest, no.

Nuremberg. Customer here. The sales pages literally say "dedicated resources" when you ask if it's bare metal. The language is engineered to confuse.

This confirms what we suspected. The confusion is not accidental. "Dedicated resources" is a term of art designed to mislead while maintaining plausible deniability.
