I just logged into GreenCloudVPS and found a fourth one I forgot. Singapore node. $6/month. "Temporary" again.
I have 9 across 5 providers. I know exactly how many because I automated the inventory. What I do not have is the courage to delete any of them. What if AWS ap-southeast-1 burns down tomorrow? My Hetzner Singapore backup of a backup becomes critical infrastructure.

Your backup chain has a backup chain. This is not redundancy. This is digital hoarding with a BGP prefix.

I have 2 unused. Both Windows Server. One is for "testing Group Policy" since 2023. I do not even have an AD domain anymore. I migrated to Entra ID. The other one I keep because the RDP wallpaper reminds me of my old office. That is $34/month nostalgia.
One. Hetzner Nuremberg. Bought it to host a Mastodon instance for my street. Three people signed up including me and my cat. I am still paying because canceling feels like admitting the neighborhood does not need me.

I have 3 unused out of 47 total. That is 6.4% waste. I consider this excellent. The unused ones are at HostHatch Oslo, RackNerd New York, and a Hetzner auction box in Falkenstein. The Hetzner one I keep because it has a 2TB disk and I might need it. I have said this for 11 months.
3-2-1 rule for backups. 3 copies, 2 media, 1 offsite. What they do not teach you: the offsite copy becomes a VPS you forget and pay for forever. I have 2 "offsite" VPS that have not synced in 14 months. They are not backups. They are memorials to my former diligence.
