Has anyone actually tried asking for refund on months of non-use? Not the abuse-desk horror story, just a normal request? I am curious if any provider has ever said yes.

In my experience: no. The terms are clear. You paid, we provided, usage is your responsibility. The only exceptions were medical emergencies with documentation, and even then it was credit not cash.

I just cancelled the OVHcloud Singapore one. Took 4 clicks. I feel lighter. The Vultr one I am keeping because I actually need it next week. Probably. Maybe. This is how it starts again.

What tool do people use to track this? I tried NetBox but that is for infrastructure I actually manage. I need "infrastructure I forgot about but still pay for" software.

I use a plain text file and a cron job that emails me monthly. Low tech. Works. The key part is the email goes to my personal address, not the one buried under provider newsletters.

My homelab has 14 physical machines drawing 400W continuous. I do not get to judge anyone's cloud waste. At least your forgotten VPS does not heat your bedroom to 28 degrees in August.
Did we ever establish what the average actually is? Kenji3 guessed higher than people admit. From the replies I count: 0,1,2,3,3,4,5,6,8,9,12,12,14,47-with-3-unused. That is not a normal distribution. That is a cry for help.
This. The median is probably 3-4 but the tail is very long and very expensive.
