I may be wrong, but I think this community has a collective blind spot. We track $3/year deals like sport, yet we never talk about the boxes we forget exist.
I currently pay for 4 VPS I do not use:
- 1 at OVHcloud (Singapore, intended for WireGuard, never deployed)
- 1 at Vultr (Singapore, "temporary" test bench, 14 months ago)
- 2 at Hetzner (Falkenstein, backup plan for a project that shipped elsewhere)
Total waste: roughly $18/month. I am not proud.
Please reply with your count. I suspect the average here is higher than anyone admits.

One ticket: "customer reports server unused for 8 months, demands refund for all 8 months because he forgot password and could not log in to verify it was unused"
We denied, he opened 4 more tickets, each more creative than the last
Current personal count: 2, both for "testing" that never resumed

We literally cannot email you to say "you are not using this." That is not a thing providers do. We would be accused of trying to cancel paying customers. The incentive structure is broken and everyone knows it.

Zero. I have a spreadsheet. Every payday I open it. Anything not touched in 30 days gets cancelled before the next billing cycle. Brutal but necessary.
