Black Friday 2025 deals — what did you actually buy?

(actually, (this is why I run my own (Proxmox ) cluster now))

The oversubscription game is (frankly) exhausting. I picked up a (used) Dell R640 off eBay for $180 (no RAM, ) and (2x) 512GB NVMe for $22/ea. Total platform cost: under $250.

Power draw is (actually) 85W idle. (not great, (not terrible))).

My BF "deal" was (just) electricity cost arbitrage. Simpler.

Sagepat my dude you are running a space heater in your closet 85W thats like leaving a hair dryer on 24/7 your partner must love you for that electric bill Anyway my black friday was wild I got the Contabo 1TB that svendeal mentioned but also I renewed my cPanel license for 3 years because they had this weird promo where if you bought the deluxe package you got a free softaculous license which I dont even use but I bought it anyway because numbers go brrrrr I have 14 vps now and I use maybe 3 of them the rest just run uptime kuma watching each other its vps inception

Complexity is the enemy
One HostHatch 2GB
One backup tested monthly
No spreadsheet

Peace

(look, I love a good home lab (who doesn't?)) (but have you people considered (and I mean this gently)) (the maintenance burden?)

(my "deal" this year was (ironically) paying *more* for managed Kubernetes (from Hetzner, if you must know: https://www.hetzner.com/cloud)) (because I ran the numbers (twice (actually three times))) (and my time is worth $47/hour on weekends)

(so I "saved" negative money) (which is spending) (but I slept through the entire weekend) (uninterrupted) (for the first time in (counts) four years?)

Worth it. (probably.) (ask me in March.)

push. done. coffee.

(the whole "managed vs DIY" thing) (I think I'm with annexbi on this one) (I used to chase every deal) (like svendeal with the spreadsheets) (I had three (no, four) (actually five?) different providers) (all monitoring each other) (it was a whole thing) (nested anxiety ) (never resolving anything) (just...)

This year I bought nothing. (well, almost nothing) (a domain I won't use) (but that's normal, right?)

But how much RAM

@sagepat R640 with no RAM? Thats just a fancy paperweight my dude. Throw in 256GB DDR4 ECC and then we're talking. I picked up 512GB (8x64) from a decommissioned HPE box for $220, seller didnt even know what he had

My BF score:

  • 2x EPYC 7402 from CloudCone — 48C/96T each, $89/mo (not BF but negotiated)
  • 1.5TB RAM across three nodes
  • NVMe pool: 24TB raw
  • Total monthly: $267

Your "power draw" is cute. I pay more in colo than you paid for that Dell.

Hej, I am buy from Hostinger, malý server, 2GB, $18/yr

Before I am look into config, he is already down. Two times. Into one week.

No, I am not angry. I am just... no. I am little angry.

I am open ticket, they are say "please to wait". I am wait. Still wait.

My friend he is say "you get what you pay". Hej, yes. But I am pay for server, not for lesson into patience.

Next year I am maybe buy nothing. Maybe. Or maybe I am buy more. No know. Black friday is like this.
