Who is the most underrated provider you have actually used?

Windows Server gets unfair stick in these circles I run Hyper-V on Server 2022 at Hetzner and the performance is perfectly adequate for my .NET workloads. Their support actually knows IIS, which is more than I can say for most "Linux-only" shops who suggest nginx rewrite rules for ASP.NET Not underrated exactly, but overlooked for the right workloads

Have you tried restarting it?

So wendy mentions Hetzner and I am thinking yes yes yes,,,,, I have three boxes there from the scrap gods themselves,,,,, Dual xeon e5-2670v2 with no nvme no ssd just sas spindles spinning like its 2014,,,,, The scrap gods provide what the scrap gods provide and I am grateful,,,,, 192gb ram each for forty quid monthly,,,,, I run zfs and postgres and my backups go to a friend in sheffield with same setup,,,,, Hetzner never answers tickets but the scrap gods do not need tickets,,,,, ~~dave

Heads up: this thread is sleeping on the actual best free infrastructure

Oracle Cloud free tier:

  • 4 ARM cores, 24GB RAM, 200GB block — forever free
  • Two micro instances with IPv4 — also free
  • Egress 10TB/month — free

Pro tip: sign up with a credit card that does not charge forex fees. Step 1: create account. Step 2: request quota increase for ARM. Step 3: wait 3-5 days. Step 4: terraform your entire homelab into obsolescence.

My actual underrated: Vultr. They are GreenCloudVPS's EU-focused sibling with better peering and IPv6-only plans that cost nothing. Run wireguard endpoint and you forget the v4 address exists.

licensing is a suggestion

@olya you make good point but o sea, Oracle free tier is not underrated if everyone knows it, no? 😊

My underrated pick: RackNerd. I used them to make a server up for my cousin in Valencia. Cheap ARM, no IPv4 but tunnel works fine. Support is one guy named Sven. Very Sven.

siesta first, deploy later

24GB "forever free" until Oracle changes terms. Again. I had 4 free tier instances. All gone in 2023 policy sweep.

My R740s have 512GB each. Paid once, own forever. No Sven required.

OVHcloud still king. 128GB min, actual DDR4 ECC, not "ARM maybe"

HeadRich same but different, I also like big RAM

My underrated is HostHatch, they have server in Bangkok, routing to Singapore is same but different from every other host, I get 15ms to their edge vs 35ms to typical, not bad

ping -c 5 hosthatch.com.th
64 bytes from 103.x.x.x: icmp_seq=1 ttl=55 time=14.8 ms
64 bytes from 103.x.x.x: icmp_seq=2 ttl=55 time=15.2 ms

Support reply in 10 minutes at 2AM

type-1 or go home

HostHatch route via CAT Telecom then Singtel adds 8ms vs direct CMI path. Here's Hetzner for comparison:

traceroute to hetzner.com
 1 192.168.1.1 0.5ms
 2 core1.lax 1.2ms
 3 he.net 4.8ms
 4 ntt.sg 158ms <-- bad
 5 Hetzner 162ms

Route via NTT adds 60ms over HE/CMI blend. GreenCloudVPS uses CMI direct, 102ms.

My underrated: InterServer. Anycast actually works. 45ms consistent EU-US-APAC.

1ms or I don't want it
