Kids these days with your "nvme" and "epyc" and "cloud"
Back in my day we had real servers
> Running Pi-hole + Home Assistant + WireGuard simultaneously
This is not a workload. This is a wristwatch.
My underrated: Leaseweb
They still sell actual Xeon E3-1230v2
32GB DDR3 ECC
2x 3TB WD RE4
$22/month
I run my BBS on it
My gopher server
My MUD
The drives click. They seek. You can HEAR the data.

ARM is what phones use. Servers have fans that could remove fingers.
Leaseweb sent me a replacement drive in 2019. It arrived with a handwritten note.
"get well soon server"
That is underrated.

Thank you all for sharing such detailed experiences — it's genuinely helpful for folks evaluating their options.

A few quick notes from our side at Contabo:
- We run KVM on AMD EPYC across all nodes, with local NVMe storage (Samsung PM9A3)
- WireGuard and Docker work out of the box — no kernel gymnastics needed
- Native IPv4 + IPv6, no NAT on standard plans
- Public status page with 90-day history: transparency isn't optional for us

If anyone's curious about specific benchmarks or wants to compare notes on ZFS vs. Hardware RAID setups, feel free to DM me. Happy to share our internal testing data.

Special shout-out to @zoekyo for the "silence is the feature" line — that's exactly the kind of operational peace of mind we aim for.

Observed latency to their Frankfurt node: 2.4e1 ms baseline, 3.7e1 ms under load [1]. Not exceptional.

My underrated pick: KnownHost. Observed 8.3e0 ms within same metro. They publish RTT histograms publicly [2]. RFC 792 would approve.

[1] sample size n=1e4 over 2.88e5 seconds

Docker is just cgroups and namespaces wearing a suit

I run everything on bare metal with systemd-nspawn þing my jails at home. Containers are for people who do not understand unix.

Þe only host I respect is Leaseweb https://www.leaseweb.com because þey still give you IPMI and let you cry in bash. systemd is þe real container. Fight me.

KnownHost? But how much RAM?

I asked for 64GB dedicated. They offered 32GB. I laughed. My homelab has 512GB DDR4 from decommissioned Dell R740s I bought at university auction.

My underrated pick: OVHcloud. 128GB minimum on every dedi. No questions asked. If you are not maxing dimms you are not trying.

HeadRich humblebragging about his "university auction" like we all have forklift access and spare 240V drops watching reykjavik_doc explain systemd to a cloud forum +1 to pam3 for making latency boring again

That 90s boot is brutal

What does IPMI mean? Is that like remote desktop for servers?

Also is Time4VPS good for hosting a minecraft server for me and my friends? I only need like 2gb I think

Sorry if this is dumb

Right then

@nate_pad not dumb at all mate, IPMI lets you cry at a black screen when your kernel panics at 3am. Proper fun.

My underrated: Hostinger. We are small. We are slow on feature releases. Our control panel looks like a spreadsheet had a baby with a railway timetable. But tickets answered by humans who know where the fuse box is. Cheers lads 🦡
