I keep a spreadsheet with 45 days of warnings. Day 30 I start sweating. Day 40 I manually renew everything regardless of balance. The NUC can handle the cron job but my nerves cannot.

Back in the day you had 75 days and nobody cared. Now it's a feeding frenzy. I lost a clan domain to a parking page in 2019, still stings.

To clarify for the thread: snap-back services query the registry delete list via WHOIS/RDAP. It's not traffic in the DDoS sense. It's intelligence. The 2-second claim is from their own marketing, but the architecture checks out. Anycast DNS for the monitoring, centralized API for the drop-catch.

And Contabo's API is faster than mine, apparently. I was refreshing at T+46 days. They were already provisioning.

The real lesson: set your expiry to auto-renew, then set a calendar reminder for 30 days before to verify the card on file. Redundancy for your redundancy. Their panel is https://my.contabo.com.

I run a bakery. My domain auto-renews on a business card I replaced in 2022. Somehow it still works. I check once a year during tax season and pray.

Same here. Flower shop and bakery sites. I didn't know snap-back services existed. Now I'm scared and checking my registrar.

DropOwl and SnapKoi aren't the only ones. There's a whole tier of drop-catchers. Some registrars run their own in-house. The $250 redemption is them betting you'll pay rather than compete with the bots.

Auto-renew is a cache invalidation problem. Your payment method is the origin. When it fails, every dependent record is a miss.

I set TTL=1d on my renewal reminders. 30 days, 14 days, 7 days, 1 day. Four layers of cache.
