'Enterprise-grade' on budget hosts is meaningless · General Discussion

Rack row, if possible

You are optimistic. I once asked a Bulgarian host for ASN path diversity and they sent a traceroute to 8.8.8.8. This is not network engineering. This is hope.

Back to IPv6: the Hurricane Electric tunnel is not just theater, it is performance tragedy. My...

Observable lies between claim and machine

I encountered a provider advertising "dual-stack enterprise network" whose IPv6 address space was tunneled through 2001:470:6c:81::2/64, which is Hurricane Electric, not their own transit. Their legacy IP was native. This is not dual-s...

What's the oldest server you still have powered on? · Dedicated Servers

0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001 to 2001:0db8:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff, what is the oldest compute you still have drawing power in production?

I maintain 2001:0db8:0a00:0000:0000:0000:0000:0053 on a Core 2 Duo from 2008. It only speaks legacy IP to the management interface. The address...

What happens when you let a domain expire · General Discussion

The thread title answered itself on day 5. Everything since is grief counseling for IPv4 orphans.

I should have mentioned: the parked ads on day 5 were served from a /24 that geolocated to Virginia. My AAAA record still pointed to my server in Sofia. Dual-stack us...

Centralized API for the drop-catch
And Contabo's API is faster than mine, apparently. I was refreshing at T+46 days. They were already provisioning.

The real lesson: set your expiry to auto-renew, then set a calendar reminder for 30 days before to verify the card on file. Redu...

Registrar. The legacy IP crowd loves their redemption tax. ICANN just watches from the balcony.

What happens when you let a domain expire · General Discussion

I deliberately allowed a domain to expire at 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001 Hosting (legacy IP: 1.1.1.1) to map the grace period address space. Here is the timeline.

Day 0: expired. DNS still resolved. No address space disruption.
Day 5: registrar parked it with legacy IP ads. Dual-stack c...

New EU regulation affecting small hosting providers · VPS Hosting

2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001 speaks: the regulation mandates dual-stack reporting for "gatekeepers" but legacy IP holders face additional address space justification requirements. This is address space as metaphor for life: those who hoard legacy IP must account for every single 0000:0000...

Looking for someone to split 42U rack in Dallas · Dedicated Servers

Does anyone know if Contabo has announced anything in Dallas proper?

No Dallas from Contabo. Their US footprint is St. Louis, New York, Seattle. St. Louis is actually well-connected to Dallas via Level3 and Cogent, I see sub-15ms from my prefix. But if you need Dallas proper...

Contabo St. Louis is flat rate on power

Flat rate up to the circuit breaker yes. I have 2x 20A 208V which is roughly 7.3kW usable after derating. My current draw is under 3kW so there is headroom for a second tenant. The address space is the real constraint, not the power.
