RackNerd vs KnownHost: my accidental 6-month A/B test

I did not plan this. I had site on RackNerd from january, same site clone on KnownHost from march. Both 4 usd, both "1 core 2 gb ssd" plans. I forgot to cancel one. Then traffic came.

Results after 6 months:

- RackNerd: 3 unplanned downtimes, 47 min total. Cpu throttled at 70% for 10+ min. Ticket response 4 hours average.
- KnownHost: 0 unplanned downtime. Cpu throttled at 90% for 3 min once. Ticket response 22 min average. They proactively warned me about traffic spike before I noticed.

I ran iperf and fio last week. KnownHost disk 40% faster. Network more stable. Same price. I do not understand market.

I am staying with KnownHost. Will cancel RackNerd this week unless someone tells me I am missing something. Both in same city, both use kvm. Cheers!

For that money you get what RackNerd probably uses:

- recycled dell r630
- samsung pm863a (read-intensive, low endurance)
- software raid or no raid

KnownHost maybe:
- supermicro with intel s4510
- hw raid or zfs mirror
- actual network redundancy

Specs matter. Ask both for chassis model. They will not tell you. That tells you everything.

¡the test it is very good! I am have the server red with RackNerd, the network slow, the support bad. I am change to KnownHost after three months, the difference it is enormous. The price same, the quality different. I am recommend. XD

I have observed similar patterns with other budget hosts. The variance at identical price points is remarkable. Two spaces after periods because structure matters.

RackNerd may be oversubscribing CPU by 8:1 or higher. KnownHost appears closer to 4:1. The throttling threshold is diagnostic.

I am buy KnownHost yesterday xixixi. Before I am use RackNerd, always down, very bad. Now my site is load fast lah. Thank you ana. KnownHost is pirst choice. No more RackNerd. Xixixi

Average. I opened 4 tickets with KnownHost in 6 months. 18, 24, 31, 15 minutes. The traffic spike warning came at 18 min.

RackNerd I opened 5. 2h 14m, 3h 52m, 6h 10m, 1h 47m, 4h 33m. The 6h one was on a Sunday.
