Numbers dont lie

Numbers lie all the time. Just redirected to /dev/null.

My stack:
| pi4, 8GB, all monitoring
| pi3, redirected to closet
| old laptop, pipe everything through wireguard
| thinkcentre tiny, actual payload

EOF is the only truth. Everything else is buffering.

/dev/null: full of good ideas

Pi4, 8GB

My "homelab":

  • 2x EPYC 7713, 64 cores each
  • 1.5TB DDR4-3200
  • 8x NVMe U.2, 7.68TB
  • 100G Mellanox, because 10G is poverty

Found on corporate liquidation. 128GB would be unusable. 512GB is entry level. Your pi4 is cute. EOF.

Well, okay, you already did.

My point stands: most people overbuy hardware and underutilize it. I run 40+ services on a single 5950X with 64GB. Immich, Jellyfin, Paperless-ngx, the whole stack. Docker compose, Caddy reverse proxy, Tailscale for mesh. I use https://tailscale.com for the mesh VPN.

The trick isn't RAM. It's not running Kubernetes for three containers. Fight me.

my cloud. my rules. my 3AM alerts.

Thread split from "Electricity Bill PTSD". Keep intros on topic. No more power math derails.

Next off-topic post gets a warning. Thank you.

Landlord issues fall under Section 14.3 of standard hosting agreements. Document everything.

Current inventory:

  • 3x R730xd, purchased via Hetzner auction — https://www.hetzner.com/sb
  • 2x APC 3kVA, load balanced
  • Custom 42U from Leaseweb, €220 delivered

Hetzner auction

Hetzner route via KnownHost adds 14ms from here. OVHcloud direct: 3ms.

traceroute to bytearbor.com
 1 10.0.0.1 0.4ms
 2 core1.isp 2.1ms
 3 peer.cobalt 11.2ms
 4 bytearbor 14.7ms

Route via RackNerd better for EU. I am lars, amsterdam, measure latency for living. 10G at home, mostly pinging things.

1ms or I don't want it

Back when I started, you measured in weeks and were grateful for a reply. Twenty years in this business, and the only metric that matters is "does it stay up."

I am Harold. I have seen every trend die. Cloud is just someone else's computer, and that someone else will bill you into bankruptcy. Mark my words: your 10G homelab is a hobby, not a career.

IPv4, IRC, and irssi — fight me

Hi everyone. Sorry if this is a dumb question but how do you all afford this stuff?

Im sarah, second year cs at state school. My "homelab" is a thinkpad from 2018 with 8gb ram. Runs proxmox barely. Would love to learn more about networking but everything costs so much money..

Thank you all for being so cool though!
