I am doom from reykjavík and I run everything on systemd units with þe old ways. No containers at home. No kubernetes. Just systemd-nspawn when I absolutely must isolate þings. docker is a footgun wrapped in yaml

Þe best orchestrator is a well-organized /etc/systemd/system/

So I am Klaus from München and I find this very gemütlich, all these small Homelabs. But so: the German Federal Office for Information Security has very clear Recommendations for the Operation of Kubernetes Clusters, and I think this is important. My Setup at Home runs on three used ThinkCentre M920q with 64GB RAM each, very efficient, very quiet. The Nodes are named after Bavarian Lakes: Ammersee, Chiemsee, StarnbergerSee. The ControlPlane is gemütlich. The etcdBackups are not gemütlich when I forget them.

So. Na yes.

Actually, (if you're running systemd units (and not containers (which I respect but find limiting))), proxmox makes a decent substrate for spawning those as (proper) LXC unprivileged containers with (nested) systemd inside. Helpful for resource accounting.

I'm pat from bristol. (my first homelab was (genuinely)) a hp microserver n54l running freenas (now truenas core (not scale (zfs on linux gives me hives))).

For those wanting Oracle Cloud free tier ARM instead:

1. Sign up at cloud.oracle.com with any credit card (prepaid works, heads up: they do a $1 hold)
2. Request an Ampere A1 in your home region—pro tip: Frankfurt usually has better availability than Ashburn
3. Configure 4 OCPUs and 24GB RAM maximum (anything above gets reclaimed, learned this the hard way)
4. Install Ubuntu 22.04, then immediately:
A) disable iptables-nft and install iptables-legacy
B) set up unattended-upgrades with only security repos enabled
5. Use rsync for off-instance backups—Oracle's block volumes are not included in Always Free

I'm Olya from Vilnius. Four free tier instances across three tenancies, zero dollars spent since 2021.

Just checked today: $8000-12000 on the secondary market for anything routable. Prices only go up.

Oracle giving away ipv6-only instances now. Coincidence? No. V4 exhaustion is real and the blood is in the water.

Dear/Madam @Hel,

Kindly advise where the Dell R720 was found for fifty euro only, as the prices in the EU market are quite high itself. I am searching for such deals in the Netherlands region.

I am Priya from Bangalore, presently located in Amsterdam. Running Squid proxy clusters on rented VPS for family streaming back home. The latency is manageable only.
