Found this place through a BGP communities thread on another forum. I operate a small network under AS64512, currently announcing two /48s and a /24 via two upstreams plus one peer at a regional IX. My fun fact: I once spent three hours debugging what turned out to be a malformed AS-SET in the RIPE IRR. The IRR, not RPKI. RPKI was valid the whole time. People always check RPKI first and forget the IRR still matters for filtering.
I run a single dedicated server at a local colo, mostly for routing experiments and a personal anycast resolver setup. Nothing fancy.
Twenty years in this business and I'm still here. Found this forum when someone linked it from a Usenet archive, if you can believe that. Back when we called these things "shell accounts" and paid $10 a month for 50MB of disk.
I run three boxes these days, all KVM, all at different providers because I've learned redundancy the hard way. Fun fact: I still have a Plesk license from 2003 that technically never expired. Mark my words, half the "cloud" providers here will be gone in eighteen months. They always are.
Oh man, Usenet. That takes me back. I found this place through a retrocomputing discord, someone mentioned they got a 512MB VPS for $3 a year and I had to see what the deal was.
I run a Pentium III 1.4GHz Tualatin as my home server, Slackware 14.2, has been up for 312 days. Also a tiny KVM slice somewhere for offsite backup. Fun fact: I still have my original Linode invite from 2009. They don't make them like that anymore, back in 2009 you got a real Xen instance with a proper console, none of this serial-over-LAN nonsense.
Retro Richard, I respect the Tualatin but that 30W TDP is brutal for the performance. My home lab is a Dell R720, dual E5-2680v2, 128GB DDR3, pulls 180W at idle. Got it for $200 plus shipping, pallet showed up with a hole in the box but the rails were fine.
Found this forum googling "cheap colo europe" after my last provider got bought out. Fun fact: I once racked a 1U that weighed 35 pounds and the cage nuts stripped. Had to use zip ties until the next maintenance window. Now I always check rail compatibility before I buy.

I run like 8 vps? All teh cheapest ones I could find. One from Contabo was €4/mo for 512mb and I definately had to snap that up. Another from OVHcloud I got for €4/mo but the network is meh. Total spend per month is like $4 im pretty proud
Fun fact: I once recieve a free upgrade because I opened a ticket asking why my disk was so slow lol

Multi Core | 2689@larryjeong which Contabo location? My €4/mo from their germany node does 89 MB/s read. Yours doing 312 means probably ryzen or you got lucky on the node. Decent disk IO, meh network at 400 Mbit though.
Recommendation: Always verify your provider's BGP community strings before announcing anything. Many "premium" networks use the same upstreams as budget hosts.

Found this place because someone on r/homelab said "just use a cheap VPS" and I was bored. I run arch on everything including my router because why not. Two vps, one runs my wireguard hub and the other hosts a matrix server that like 3 people use.
Fun fact: I once compiled firefox on a 1GB ram vps. Took 14 hours. OOM killer got it twice. SKILL ISSUE obviously, should have just used the binary. But where's the fun in that.
Half the self-hosted mail servers people run on these boxes are delivering straight to spam folders and they don't even know it.
Found this forum through a deliverability blog post comparing IP reputation across budget providers. I run a single well-maintained mail server for personal domains, plus I audit SPF/DKIM/DMARC setups for friends. My own setup: Postfix 3.7, OpenDKIM, proper PTR, TLS 1.3 only. I check it at https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/
Fun fact: I once saw a blocklist entry for an entire /24 because one tenant was running a "warmup" script. For what it's worth, there is no such thing as IP warmup in 2024. That is a myth sold by people who want your money.
For what it's worth, if your provider's IP is on UCEPROTECT Level 3, just move. Don't try to delist. Move.
