52 vps and counting

Found this place because I was googling "cheapest ipv6 only vps" at 2am and ended up in a rabbit hole. Currently at 52 boxes across maybe 15 providers? I lost count of the providers honestly. Total spend is like $47/month which is less than my phone bill

Breakdown: 18 are $10/yr or less, 8 are "storage" boxes for backups, rest are... experiments? I run pihole on 4 of them for some reason. $/GB is my religion. Found a 2GB ram box for $15/yr once and I still tell people about it.

Fun fact: I have a spreadsheet with expiration dates and I still let 3 domains expire last month because I forgot to check it. Chaos.

Hankels 52 boxes and you're running pihole on 4? Why pay for multiple DNS filters when you can self-host one properly with redundancy? I run two recursive resolvers in my stack, Unbound + AdGuard Home in Docker Compose, reverse proxy through Traefik, whole thing spins up with one docker-compose up.

Found this forum searching for "self-hosted alternatives to google workspace" and someone mentioned hosting your own mail on a cheap VPS. I do that now, plus Nextcloud, plus Immich for photos, plus a dozen other services. One dedi, E5-2650v4, 64GB, costs me $18/month. Add a $3/month VPS for offsite backup of the Docker volumes.

Fun fact: I once spent a weekend migrating everything to Podman because "Docker has a daemon" and then spent the next weekend migrating back because Compose support was broken. The self-hosting journey is the destination.

Found this place because someone on twitter said "hostpeers drama" and I had to see. I don't even run servers, I just read the threads. My "infrastructure" is a netflix subscription and a raspberry pi that I unplugged in 2021.

I found this forum through a German privacy-focused mailing list, as far as I know it was mentioned in a discussion about GDPR-compliant hosting outside of the major cloud providers. I operate two VPS and one dedicated server, all within the EU. The dedicated server is for a small Matrix homeserver for family and friends, approximately 15 users. I do not use any US-based services if it can be avoided. My DNS resolver is self-hosted with DNS-over-TLS. Fun fact: I have requested my personal data from seven hosting providers under Article 15 GDPR. Three responded properly. Two asked for passport scans. One sent me someone else's data. To be precise, I reported that one to the supervisory authority.

Fun fact: I have try to install nginx and I have break the ssh since 2 days. I have reinstall. Now I use apache lol

Lucgone you need monitoring before you need anything else. I found this forum through a status page design discussion on lobste.rs. I run 4 VPS across 3 providers, all monitored with Uptime Kuma plus external checks via a fourth provider. Current combined uptime for production services: 99.947% over 12 months. The gap from 99.99% is entirely attributable to one provider's unscheduled maintenance in March. I have the graphs. Fun fact: I once woke up to 47 alerts because my monitoring server couldn't reach the internet. The monitoring server was down. I now monitor the monitoring server from a second monitoring server. The second monitoring server is monitored by the first. This is fine.

Provider A (FRA):  12.4 ms avg, route via AMS-IX
Provider B (FRA):  28.7 ms avg, route via LHR then back
Provider C (AMS):  8.1 ms avg, direct peer

Found this forum via a traceroute enthusiasts IRC channel that still exists somehow. I run 6 VPS purely for latency measurement and route comparison. None of them host anything production. My home connection to each gets pinged every 60 seconds, data goes to InfluxDB.

Route via LHR adds 16ms for no reason. Both providers claim "premium network." one is lying.

Fun fact: I once found a routing loop between two tier 1s that lasted 4 hours. Reported it, got thanked, loop stayed for 3 more hours. The graphs don't lie but nobody reads them.

LichunLars those numbers suggest Provider B is congested on their London path, not actually a routing loop. I've seen similar with budget ASes that don't pay for enough transit — check https://bgp.tools.

Found this forum searching for "openvz vs kvm 2024" because someone in a Discord still recommended OpenVZ in this year. I run 3 KVM instances and one testbed for comparing virtualization overhead. The virtualization tax on KVM with virtio is under 2% for CPU, roughly 5-8% for disk without proper tuning. OpenVZ isn't virtualization, it's containerization with extra steps and worse isolation.

Fun fact: I once benchmarked a "dedicated CPU" VPS that was clearly pinned to a single core with cgroup limits. Provider claimed it was "bare metal performance." It was not.

Fun fact: I once bought a yearly plan and the provider shut down 3 weeks later. Got 11 months refunded as credit to their "new brand." SAME OWNERS. Still used the credit tho

Hello! I am maria from madrid. I find this forum when I want to make a server up for my brother's small business. I have one VPS with Hostinger, they are nice and help me with setup.

I try to learn nginx but it is difficult. Apache works for me now. Maybe later I change. My english is not very good, sorry.

Fun fact: I have break the server two times but support help me to restore. Very nice people.
