Hetzner vs OVHcloud - who actually delivers?

Same here on Storage Box.

OVHcloud's equivalent is Object Storage, which is S3-compatible but not the same use case. Price is comparable but you pay for egress. Storage Box is flat.

Different tools. I use both.

I rewrote my backup tool in Rust. It pushes to Hetzner Storage Box via sftp. 40% less CPU than the Python script it replaced. Not that CPU matters for nightly backups, but still.

The real win was removing a dependency on boto3. One less AWS-ism in my life.

I am Jun, and I must confess that I find the preoccupation with backup tooling somewhat tangential. My original inquiry concerned administrative interfaces for multiple properties. Has anyone experience with HestiaCP on Hetzner versus OVHcloud's VPS? I would be most interested in any variance in panel responsiveness attributable to underlying I/O.

HestiaCP is PHP. Disk latency matters more than network for panel feel. Hetzner's NVMe is consistently sub-millisecond. OVHcloud's "SSD" tier on VPS is sometimes SATA underneath, 3-5ms. You feel it on the login page.

I follow packets, but I also follow iostat.

SATA underneath on a 2024 VPS. Criminal.

IPv4, IRC, and irssi — fight me

DirectAdmin personal license is $2/month. For ten sites it's fine. LiteSpeed Web Server is extra but you don't need it. OpenLiteSpeed is free if you must have their rewrite rules.

I ran this stack on OVHcloud VPS for two years. Panel was slow, sites were fine. Moved to Hetzner, panel got faster, sites same.

Numbers:

OVHcloud VPS SSD: 180 MB/s read, 4.2 ms avg latency
Hetzner CPX11: 850 MB/s read, 0.8 ms avg latency

Both 2 vCPU, 4GB. Not comparable hardware generations.

fio, iperf, geekbench. results or gtfo.

Kimsufi is OVHcloud's budget line, ARM or old Atom. Not in their main VPS range. Different product, different expectations.

Fine for single site. Ten sites on 2GB? That's the "merem melem" your friend mentioned, just slower.
