Contabo completely vanished—anyone got a ping?
Hetzner's not Contabo's upstream, they're competitors. Contabo peers directly at DE-CIX and buys transit from Telia and Cogent last I checked. Different animal entirely. Hetzner's partner page thing is just affiliate links, not infrastructure.
Called it. Got billed this morning for a "removed" backup tier from July. Ticket still open. These shops don't have billing reconciliation, they have billing prayer.
My Contabo VPS in Singapore is pinging 230ms from here. Usually 35. Something's choked upstream, not dead. Traceroute dies at Telia in Frankfurt.
I automated a health check on my Contabo box. It's been up 47 days, but HTTP response time went from 80ms to 12 seconds since Monday. The machine lives, the network's being rationed. I have graphs.
Following.
So who's actually moving? Hetzner's €4.51 tier is same ballpark but no object storage. Was looking at Wasabi for that but the egress math hurts.
I resell Contabo to some small clients in Jakarta. This week has been... educational. Moving two clients to Hetzner Cloud Singapore, one to Linode Tokyo. Contabo's pricing was the hook, but "cheap and occasionally reachable" doesn't work when you're the one fielding tickets.
Contabo's object storage was always a MinIO cluster with lipstick. Fine for backups, terrible for anything with actual request volume. I moved to Hetzner's Storage Box months ago. €10/TB, rsync-friendly, no API to break.
Or they fired the one engineer who knew where the BGP passwords were kept. Budget host death spiral: cut costs, lose talent, surprise when the lights flicker.
