Not always gamble. I bought expired domain from Namecheap marketplace, 8 years old, clean backlink profile from local business that closed. Still ranks fine 2 years later.
The trick is checking archive.org BEFORE you buy, not after.

Bro archive.org not enough, bro need check ahrefs or semrush for backlink spam. I learn hard way too.
Semrush is what, $120/month? For someone buying $12 domains? Use the free tier or just check Search Console after purchase. The penalty shows immediately if it's manual.
For algo penalties you're guessing anyway.
In Portugal we use Sapo for email since forever but for domains I go with Porkbun or Cloudflare. Cloudflare registrar has no markup, very clean.
Larry, if you abandon, transfer the DNS to Cloudflare before you let it expire. Easier to manage.
This. Cloudflare registrar is cost price. No upsell, no auction spam emails.
Didnt know Cloudflare sell domains. I use them for CDN on my VPS. Will check.
They don't sell, they resell at cost. Big difference. You need existing Cloudflare account, and they don't do all TLDs. Check their list.
I learning domain very much now. In Vietnam we have Mat Bao but price high. I use Namecheap for .com, very cheap first year.
Namecheap first year is loss leader. Check renewal price before you fall in love. My .io went from $8 to $45.
Oh damn. Good tip. I always look at first year only.
