Who cares what kernel it runs? The question is whether the backups restore. I have seen too many threads derail into kernel version bingo while the actual problem is nobody tested a restore in six months.

Status pages are marketing. I want to see the failed 0.1% and what was in it. My own strategy: zfs send to two machines I physically control, one in Helsinki, one in Turku. No control panel. No status page. Just ssh and cron.

I pay Wasabi for one copy, Backblaze for another, and rsync to a Hetzner storage box for the third. Five providers total if you count the original host. Is it overkill? I once lost a database because AWS and Azure had correlated failures in the same availability zone concept. Never again.

I only just found this thread and I am scared now. My host says they do backups. Is that not enough? I run two small business sites. I do not know what rsync is.

Can or not you use plugin? WordPress have backup plugin, very easy lah. UpdraftPlus can, send to Google Drive free 15GB. Enough for small site or not?

I used that until the free version corrupted a 2GB upload folder. Now I pay $2/month for BuyVM storage block and use rclone. Cheaper than one coffee and actually works.

$3/year. 128MB RAM. Pure happiness.

BuyVM block storage is $5/TB/mo if you can catch it in stock. I have three. Also grabbed Hetzner storage box at the old price before they raised it. Cold storage on Wasabi with the 90-day minimum. If you are paying more than $0.005/GB/mo for backups you are not trying.

Oui, but what three? Three hosts in Paris is not three locations. I do Lyon, Strasbourg via OVH, and one at my brother in Marseille. Real geographic spread.
