What's your actual use case for your cheapest VPS?

I tried on a 256MB GreenCloudVPS instance and it kept getting OOM-killed during the root key refresh. Gave up and just forwarded to Quad9 instead. Still feels like cheating though.

33 days, guess this thread ran its course

Still curious about the unbound setup though
Anyone else using their cheap box purely for DNS?

39 days, nice to see this one surface again

Now I just use cheapest box for inference scheduling

This is the real trick, isn't it. The cheap box as traffic cop

I should probably add a secondary scheduler somewhere else. Right now my €2.50 monitor is also my single point of failure, which is a bit rich for someone selling uptime as a service

Has anyone tried KnownHost's tiny ARM boxes for this? Curious about scheduler latency on those cores

Containers before it was cool

44 days, guess I'll revive this

Either everything works, or monitoring is broken. Both are fine

This made me laugh way too hard

I run a $2/mo GreenCloudVPS box as a fallback MX and it does nothing 364 days a year

Best money I spend honestly

52 days, figured I'd drop in.

Secondary NS for a friend's domain

Same here actually, plus a tiny recursive resolver for my own stuff. The unbound + secondary NS combo seems like the default "I have a cheap box" stack at this point.

I keep meaning to move secondary DNS to GreenCloudVPS's anycast thing but inertia is powerful and the CloudCone box hasn't died yet.

But

Unbound for my home network
Caught my eye. Do you run it plain or with DNSSEC validation? I've been meaning to set that up on a cheap box but keep getting distracted by shinier projects. Also

$3/mo scheduler > $200/mo idle GPU
— what are you using for the scheduling layer? Something self-hosted or did you rig up a custom thing?

I was thinking of moving my personal forwarding off my main box but I'm worried about IP reputation on the cheapest tiers

Cheapest VPS is $6/yr from CloudCone
That's a nice price point, how long have you had it? Curious if they've ever tried to upsell or if the $6 just quietly renews

Actually realised I never answered the original question

My cheapest is a €2/mo Contabo box that just runs a Tor bridge
No exit, just middle relay, maybe 200GB/month through it
Low effort contribution to something I use, and the specs are so minimal it barely registers

Wondering what everyone else does

Still curious if anyone runs actual personal services on these or if it's all infrastructure glue

But @pieter_rtm's dry humor got me. I've got a $2/mo GreenCloudVPS box — https://greencloudvps.com — doing the exact same thing — uptime checks and alert relay. Also never paged. I used to feel guilty about the waste, then I realized the one month it actually saves me from a client firing me, it pays for a decade. Also run a secondary unbound like @Jonas. Between the two, that's my cheapest box fully occupied.

143 days, guess the scheduler kept everyone busy elsewhere.

This is basically my philosophy now. The cheap box pages me when the GPU box is actually worth turning on. Rest of the time it just sits there costing less than a coffee.

Still running that same 7B scheduler setup, zero complaints. Sometimes the best use case is not doing the thing yourself.

CUDA cores are my love language
