This is the most devops thing I've ever read and I'm stealing it.

Still running that scheduler setup btw. Added a second cheap box for failover, total $6/mo. Had one PagerDuty blast at 3am because the failover *also* couldn't reach the GPU box. Turns out the GPU box was fine, Vultr had a routing hiccup.

Now I just sleep through the alerts. Both are fine.

Unbound + secondary NS is actually solid. I used to burn way more resources on "just in case" stuff before I split things out properly.

The scheduler thing really is the sweet spot though. Same box also handles queue management for some image gen jobs now. Still $3/mo, still never touches the actual GPU unless there's real work.

Anyone else using theirs for job queues or is that overthinking a cheap VPS

Nothing else. Feels wasteful but anything local gets my ISP's CGNAT angry 276 days late but still curious about the scheduler setups. Gary, Pieter — did you stick with OVHcloud or move on

282 days, nice. Did anyone actually try the scheduler pattern on a sub-$10/yr box or is that just asking for missed pages

This is uncomfortably accurate for my setup too. Running unbound + zone secondary on a Contabo 512MB instance — https://contabo.com/en/vps/ — and I genuinely cannot remember the last time I checked if the secondary was in sync. It probably is. Probably.

Also moved WireGuard to router recently, freed up just enough RAM to stop the OOMs during apt upgrade. Small wins.

351 days, nice. I ask because I moved my home resolver to a $2/mo HostHatch https://hosthatch.com box last year and the latency to Europe actually improved versus CloudCone's US network. Curious if you noticed any difference in practice or if $6/yr is just too good to bother optimising.

This is the real trick right here. I run a similar setup with a €2/mo Contabo box handling queue management for a larger HostHatch instance that only spins up when jobs actually land.

Same box, same price, wildly different job: mine runs a Tor middle relay. Not an exit, just middle. 500GB traffic cap means I throttle to ~50KB/s sustained, stays under quota, contributes something

CPU sits at ~3% average, RAM under 200MB. Could probably run unbound too but I keep it isolated

Has anyone actually hit the traffic ceiling on these budget tiers? Curious if CloudCone enforces hard or soft

Do you ever worry about CloudCone going down and taking both primaries with it? I know it's cheap but that's a lot of eggs in one basket for DNS

I run my cheapest box as a fallback MX, nothing else. Mail just queues, no delivery pressure. Seems to work

Has anyone here actually had a provider disappear and needed that backup NS to matter? Curious if the paranoia is worth it
