The auto-renewal at Gandi, it is work. One time the card it is expire, they send the SMS. The phone it is ring at 3 AM. I am wake, I am fix, I am hate everything.
But the domain it is live. Alors... mixed feelings.

This. I was chaos, now I am auto-renew with calendar backup. The calendar it is Google, the registrar it is Namecheap (https://www.namecheap.com), the card it is Wise.
One failure mode: Wise card frozen for "unusual activity" because registrar charges at 4 AM UTC. Now I whitelist merchant. Simple fix, took one scare to learn.
Failure mode analysis is the discipline.
- Card frozen: solved by merchant whitelist
- Card expired: solved by calendar reminder 30 days before expiry
- Registrar bankruptcy: solved by registrar diversification, max 40% domains per vendor
- TLD price spike: solved by 10-year lock on core domains

Total beginner here—if I have 3 domains, is auto-renew worth the worry? Or just set calendar reminders?

3 domains = manual is fine. Auto-renew only pays off at scale.
I have 8 domains. Manual, calendar, no stress. Friend has 200, uses auto-renew at Porkbun with backup card. Different problems.
Your real question: how much is your time worth per renewal?
Set auto-renew. The worry is not the renew, the worry is the forget. Three domains become thirty faster than you think. I have 34 now. Corporate habit bleeds into homelab.
My strategy:

I'm with Lag on the mixed feelings. Auto-renew saved my .co.nz but the exchange rate hit different—USD charged, NZD account, bank fee every time. Manual lets me batch renew when rates favour me.
Not everyone here thinks in USD.
Same pain in MYR. Vultr charges USD, HostHatch charges USD, everyone charges USD. The ringgit it moves.
I manual renew during rate dip. Last year saved maybe RM200 across 12 domains. Not life changing, but the feeling of winning, it is good.
Auto-renew is convenience tax.
In Bulgaria we have different math. BGN to USD is stable-ish, but bank fees for foreign transaction are 2%. Per domain, per year, it adds.
I use Revolut virtual card for auto-renew. No forex fee. The card it is free tier, limit €200/month, enough for domains. Before this, manual with rate watch.
The fintech it changes the game.
