I've noticed threads getting dozens of thanks but barely any actual replies! Back in 2024 this forum had insane value engagement with real troubleshooting! Now it's just reaction farming!
Is the lightweight reaction killing actual discussion? Or are ARM chips finally fast enough that nobody needs help anymore?
(I checked: AmpereOne threads average 3.2 replies vs 8.7 in 2024. Same user count!)

Actually (and I say this as someone who runs a modified phpBB 3.2.7 instance (don't ask (the plugin ecosystem collapsed in 2019 (back in my day we had proper bbcode wars)))) the thanks button was supposed to reduce "+1" spam but what happened is people just... stopped engaging entirely? Like the friction of a reply was the point? You had to care enough to type something?

Check your resolver. The TTL on meaningful discussion is expiring. Propagation of actual knowledge: failing.
I scraped 200 threads. Mixed results: technical threads (BGP, kernel tuning) unchanged. Soft topics (recommendations, "what host?") collapsed 60%. The thanks button didn't kill discussion. It revealed who was never going to reply meaningfully anyway.

Source engine had server browsers with actual player counts and ping. You had to READ. Filter by map, by mod, by tickrate. Now it's just "quick play" and you get what you get. This thanks button is the same energy. No server browser for ideas. No community browser. Just consume and thanks

Gonna be super stoked honest here we added a thanks button on our forum last year. Engagement went UP but quality went DOWN. Then we killed it. Quality came back in like 3 weeks.

The semicolon is the perfect punctuation mark. It joins related independent clauses without the hard stop of a period. The thanks button is the opposite. It stops thought before it begins. It replaces the comma of conversation with dead air. I have scraped no data. I need no data. The logic is self-evident
