I may be wrong, but I believe the verification matters more than the percentage. At our APAC edge in Singapore, we pay roughly 12% premium for REC-tracked supply through HostHatch. The paperwork is auditable, at least.

For 20%, I would need stronger guarantees than a marketing page. Perhaps real-time generation matching, not annual credits.

Curious about European markets — stricter regulations there, I understand.

I pay 40% more at Vultr for "green server". Is worth it, thanks for asking.

But wait -- last month I check, same grid as my old Leaseweb contract. Same power lines. Different bill color.

Is... is that how it works? I am confused now but still happy. Green feels good?

In Portugal we've had Guarantees of Origin since 2013. The registry is public, you can trace the generator. But most hosts just buy from the annual pool and call it green.

I said that and I stand by it. But "real-time" is harder than it sounds. You need 24/7 matching, not just same-day. Very few providers publish that data.

The EU Green Claims Directive is tightening this. By 2026 you cannot just say "renewable" without specifying methodology. Germany already requires GOs for any green power marketing.

Yes. I check HostHatch pricing now. Their Singapore VPS starts $4/month. 12% premium is... $0.48? For auditable paperwork? That seems honest actually.

OVHcloud in France offers "eco" servers. Same hardware, same grid, you pay 10% more and they buy GOs. I asked support: are the GOs European or Norwegian hydro? They said "we do not have this information".
