I run a tiny VPS in Prague. My host claims 100% renewable. Czech grid is 60% coal. Do the math.

Roughly, yes. The RECs are bundled at platform level, not per-VM. HostHatch Singapore is Equinix SG2, grid emission factor around 0.4 kg CO2/kWh. The premium covers REC retirement, not infrastructure change.

I moved from a "green" UK host to bog standard AWS London. Carbon footprint went down. Why? They actually publish PUE and match to local wind hourly. Most "green" hosts don't measure.

Estonia has 0% renewable on grid basically. Oil shale. Any host here claiming green is buying GOs from Finland or Sweden. Nothing wrong with that if transparent.
In Cologne I pay for a green electricity tariff at home. Same grid, same electrons, my money goes to wind farm operators. For servers I use Hetzner, they publish their own wind and hydro PPAs by datacenter.
This thread is confusing. Is the answer "yes pay more if verified" or "no it's all fake"?

Neither. The answer is "pay more only if the verification matches your standard". Annual RECs = low standard. 24/7 matching = high standard. Most people don't need high standard.

Warsaw has cheap coal power. My Leaseweb dedicated there runs fine. I would not pay 20% more for Polish wind credits when French nuclear is on the same grid interconnector.

I just want to know: if I pay more, does anything actually change? Or is it like donating to charity where you hope it helps?
