Contabo dedi with no optical still tempting tho. $15/mo for 64gb ram is wild. Their Munich dc, no weird st louis routing for me.

Contabo's $15 tier is Hetzner's AX42 price territory now. Different use case but worth comparing.

Contabo oversells ram hard. Ask me how I know.

How do you know?

#15

Because I measured swap thrashing on three separate "64gb" boxes during concurrent compile jobs. Same workload on Hetzner CPX, no issue. Not saying dont buy, just saying know what youre buying.

My coffee cup holder theory stands undefeated

Homelab perspective: my dell r720 has a dvd drive and I have used it exactly once to install proxmox because the usb boot was being weird about uefi. Now it holds a screwdriver.

Physical media for airgapped installs is still a thing in some places. Not everyone has ipmi on a management vlan.

#19

Rotterdam colo, no ipmi on the cheap stuff here. I keep a usb dvd drive in the rack for the one box that needs it quarterly. Not installed, just cabled when needed.

Manila heat and dust, moving parts die faster. I would pay to not have an optical drive. Less failure domain.
