Poll: Do you actually use your server's optical drive?
Bangalore here. Power cuts are real, every watt matters. Optical drive is maybe 5w idle but thats 5w of battery I dont have on ups.
5w x 47 boxes x 8760 hours is 2 megawatt-hours annually I can account for. Not huge but not zero.
436 days. reboot is surrender.
Has anyone actually removed the drive and seen thermal improvement? The bay is usually isolated from the main airflow.
I removed one from an old supermicro, no temp change on adjacent ssd. Bay was dead air space.
Manchester dyslexic and I read that as "dead air spice" first time. Makes no sense but sounds cool.
Mi supermicro tiene dead air spice tambien. No optical, no problema.
hot air, steady hand, magic smoke
