I ran a four-node "monitoring mesh" where each node monitored the other three, plus a fifth VPS that only existed to monitor whether the monitoring nodes agreed with each other. : I spent $34/month to achieve 99.947% observability of a $12/year infrastructure stack. Alert fatigue set in at week two. The status page had more green than a golf course. I kept it running for eight months because stopping felt like admitting defeat. Current uptime on the watcher-of-watchers: 312 days, 14 hours. It has never once sent a useful notification.

Prices only go up. That €4/month box? Same specs, €6 now. Saw it on OVHcloud last week.

I run a single /32 on a €3 slice. It does nothing but reply to ping. Traceroute novelty. "Look, I have presence in that datacenter."

IPv4 scarcity makes fools of us all.

I run a BBS door game on my GreenCloudVPS box. LORD, tradewars, the works. Telnet only, no ssh. 14.4k emulation for "authentic feel"

8 callers since 2024. 6 r me testing. 1 is a bot I forgot about. 1 might be a real human?

Sysop page still works. My beeper number in the config. I dont own a beeper anymore :-)

But check this: I had a RackNerd box in Los Angeles, yeah? Ran nothing but ntp server. Stratum 2. Talked to pool.ntp.org like a champ?

I had this NAT VPS from Hostinger, $2/mo, one port forwarded. Ran a 

socat
relay to my home pi-hole. It actually works 

socat TCP4-LISTEN:53,fork TCP4:192.168.1.5:53

DNS over nat. Ridiculous but functional. https://www.hostinger.com
