I'll start: I'm paying $3/month to host a Minecraft server for exactly 2 players. Myself and my alt account. The server averages 0.8 players online.

Ran a bot at 3am that would order dominos whenever it detected I was still awake via my github commit timestamps
Anyway it cost me $47 in pizza one week before I shut it down
Idk why I do this
if commits_after_midnight:
order("large pepperoni")

Bro this is very good hahaha
I make a test with my €4/mo box from Contabo, I run a wedding photo gallery for my cousin 😂 she have 200 guests, the VPS crash in 10 minutes when she send the link on whatsapp
Now she dont talk with me anymore, but is very good learning experience!
I ran a weather station dashboard on a €4/mo NAT VPS from OVHcloud for 3 years, collected data from a €2 sensor I got from some random aliexpress seller
Never looked at the graphs once. Just liked seeing the ram usage stay at 12%
Definately worth it im
Fun little project: I got a 128MB NAT VPS from Hetzner for like €4/month and thought "can I run Windows 98 in a browser?"
It actually works. Used v86 emulator, served it all through nginx on the same box. 12 second boot time. Minesweeper playable at 4fps.
v86: {
memory: 64 * 1024 * 1024,
vga_memory: 2 * 1024 * 1024,
// yes this is stupid
}My wife still doesn't understand why I showed her this.
My bar for ridiculous is broken
Currently my cheapest is a $6/year 256MB from RackNerd running nothing but a script that pings my other 51 boxes and emails me when one dies
The email goes to a 53rd box running mailcow
I did the math once: that's $0.023 per ping per year. 😂
My yabs on that one:
I thought vps was just for websites and stuff!!
I run a discord bot for my study group on a $4/month from Vultr but it goes offline alot when I forget to pay 😅
Thank you everyone for the ideas though!!
Ngl I tried to run llama 3.1 8B on a 2GB RAM VPS from Hostinger (https://www.hostinger.com). It swapped so hard the provider messaged me asking if I was mining crypto
Took 47 minutes to generate "hello world"
In my defense I was trying to see if q4_0 quantization + zram + praying would work
It did not
Back in 2009 I ran a Counter-Strike 1.6 server on a Pentium 4 dedicated with 512MB RAM and it hosted 32 players smooth as butter. They don't make them like that anymore.
Now I have a GreenCloudVPS Ryzen box and I use it to emulate that same Pentium 4 experience in DOSBox. The nostalgia hits different when you're paying $15/month to pretend it's 2005.
My nephew asked why I don't just run the modern CS. I told him he wouldn't understand.
Just use qemu with kvm acceleration
Skill issue
Seriously though who runs WINDOWS on a VPS in 2026. This whole thread is a cry for help. 🐧
