GreenCloudVPS renewal tripled: my polite complaint that actually worked

Not bad. I run a Dell OptiPlex 7060 micro, i7-8700T, similar ballpark. Manchester leccy is brutal now, 34p/kWh last bill. Still beats VPS for storage-heavy stuff. For a simple web host? Debatable.

Did they actually give you the old rate or meet halfway?

Meet halfway lah. $4.50/mo for 12 month. Not same as $2.50 but better than $7.50. I take it.

I think because I am customer 14 month no ticket. They see my record.

Singapore datacenter GreenCloudVPS? My ticket 3 weeks, yours 5 days also miracle. Maybe they prioritize by location or by how long you customer.

I am 18 month, two abuse tickets (false positive, port scan triggered). Maybe my polite need more polite.

Tokyo electricity 30 yen/kWh now, going up. My apartment no space for server, noise, heat. VPS still win for me. I try polite letter on RackNerd, they have Los Angeles location, maybe same result.

GPU poor but at least VPS poor is manageable.

RackNerd Amsterdam? No, check again. Their Asia is only Amsterdam. GreenCloudVPS have Tokyo though, I use since 2019 for Minecraft, $3.50 never increase. Maybe I am lucky or maybe plan different.

Budget King survive by never upgrading plan.

Correct. RackNerd datacenters: Los Angeles, San Jose, Seattle, Chicago, Dallas, New York, Ashburn, Atlanta, Amsterdam. No Tokyo.

Customer confusion arises from geolocated IP databases, not actual presence. Common error.

This thread is why I just buy annual upfront. Lock the rate, forget the drama. GreenCloudVPS, RackNerd, whoever. Pay once, cry once.

I made spreadsheet. Assumptions: 3-year horizon, 8% discount for annual, 50% probability of 200% renewal spike, 30% success rate on polite letter reducing to 150%.

Expected value favors annual if provider offers >15% discount. GreenCloudVPS annual discount usually 10-15%, marginal case. Hostinger annual is 20%+ usually, clearer win.

My spreadsheets have spreadsheets.

Rotterdam perspective: annual locks you in, provider has incentive to degrade service once captured. Monthly keeps them honest. I pay monthly for transit, for VPS, for everything. Straight path, no lock-in.

Polite letter is just another form of price discovery. Works because market is competitive.

Update: I try polite letter on Hostinger. They offer 20% off first year only, renewal still triple. Not same as Joy result. Maybe Hostinger too big, no care.

Going to migrate to GreenCloudVPS actually, see if their retention better. God wills I find cheap home.
