OVH's control panel is written in what I can only assume is an esoteric dialect of PHP. I would pay the GreenCloud tax to avoid it, but I won't because I already rewrote my entire stack in Rust and now I only need a VPS once a year to compile it.
GreenCloudVPS launch promo or bait-and-switch?
Also Cologne here, I second Hetzner. The only surprise I ever got was the VAT increase and they emailed everyone two months ahead.
The "conversion optimization" thing adam20 mentioned is real and industry-wide. I saw sales teams A/B test hiding renewal prices. Legal always found out too late. The EU made clear pricing mandatory recently but most hosts just geoblock EU checkouts instead of complying.
In Argentina we get used to hidden pricing, everything is in 12 installments with mystery interest. Still, $1 to $89 is impressive even by our standards. I stick with local providers or pay Hetzner in euros and eat the transfer fee.
52 VPS and I have never once been surprised by a renewal. Here's my system: spreadsheet with renewal date, price, and whether I actually use it. GreenCloudVPS made the spreadsheet in 2021 and left it.
Following.
3-2-1 rule for VPS too: 3 providers, 2 you've tested restores on, 1 you're not locked into annually. GreenCloudVPS fails all three for me now.
Has anyone actually used their storage VPS? The birthday deal was for compute but I'm curious if the bait and switch applies across product lines.
Storage VPS is same company same terms. I would not risk it. Their Vietnam DC is cheap but if price doubles at renewal you lose the savings.
Same here on the screenshot thing. I do it for every host now. Learned from Uma's story.
