As of last week: $4 Basic = IPv6 only. $6 Basic = IPv4 + IPv6. The $2 v4 add-on on the $4 plan is gone, or at least I can't find it.
CS student budget feels this directly. Hetzner's €4.75 is roughly $5.20, so DO $6 is competitive if you need US East.
I used Contabo for a year, Nuremberg DC. IPv6 was solid, CGNAT v4 was fine for apt updates and git pulls. The only time I cared was when I wanted to run a personal VPN endpoint. Moved that function to a €2.50 Hetzner CX11 in Falkenstein, kept Contabo for the storage.
Separation of concerns, like srelet said. Not elegant, but it works.

This is the mature take. CGNAT v4 is not useless—it's outbound v4, which is 90% of what most workloads need. The failure mode is assuming "dual-stack" means "inbound on both."
I still want better labeling. But architecturally, treat it as IPv6-primary with v4 egress and you'll be less angry.
Following this thread with interest. Currently on OVHcloud VPS in Gravelines, real v4, but IPv6 is /128 and routing is weird. Can't delegate a /64 to my LXC containers — I used https://linuxcontainers.org for those. So my "dual-stack" is also broken, just differently.
Nobody gives you everything. You just get to choose which thing is missing.
OVHcloud v6 is statically routed to your MAC, no NDP, no /64 delegation. Known issue since 2019. Their "solution" is buy dedicated or use their public cloud with neutron.
I wasted a weekend on this. Save yourself.

In São Paulo I use a local provider for low latency, but their IPv4 is CGNAT too. For inbound I tunnel to Hetzner in Hillsboro, 160ms but stable.
Vou migrar pro selfhost ainda esse ano, mas enquanto isso o tunnel funciona.
Arrived late, read the summary. Has anyone tried Oracle Cloud free tier? Always free tier gives you 2 AMD instances with real IPv4, no NAT.
Covered in the "other providers" thread last month. Yes, it works, until it doesn't. Account termination risk, egress charges if you misconfigure, support is a void.
Not saying don't use it. Saying it's not comparable to paid hosting with a contract. Different risk profile.
This whole thread is risk profiles. Contabo: cheap, CGNAT surprise. Hetzner: cheap, clean, German bureaucracy if you have a problem. OVHcloud: cheap, v6 broken. Oracle: free, existential risk.
