Fair. I should have said "most providers at the extreme low end." OVHcloud's Starter is an outlier, and they make it back on bandwidth overages. I've seen the invoices.

The structural issue is ARIN and RIPE exhaustion. Contabo's US DCs are St. Louis, New York, Seattle—ARIN region, waitlist for anything bigger than a /22. They're not burning a real v4 on a €4 VPS. Economics are what they are. https://contabo.com/en/vps/

Economics I understand. Mislabeling I do not.

I found a Hetzner auction box, i7-3770, 32GB, 2x3TB, €24/month, /29 IPv4 included. That's 5 usable addresses. For the price of six Contabo VPSes I get actual routing. Deal sniper mode satisfied.

I have reviewed the OVHcloud documentation. Their "VPS Starter" specifications indicate IPv4 only, with IPv6 available on higher tiers. This is, at minimum, explicit.

Contabo's product descriptions state "IPv4 and IPv6" without qualification. I do not wish to overstep, but perhaps we may agree that specificity matters.

That's the screenshot I should have taken before I signed up. "IPv4 and IPv6" full stop. Not "IPv6 plus shared IPv4." Not "IPv4 via NAT."

I'm not asking for a /29 on a €4 plan. I'm asking for honest labels so I can make an informed choice.

Good luck with that in this industry. I work out of Atlanta, been through Linode (Akamai now), DigitalOcean, Vultr. DO at least calls their cheapest plan "IPv6 with IPv4 via shared IP" or whatever. It's clunky but it's true.

Contabo's not special here, they're just cheaper so more people hit the surprise.

DigitalOcean's $4 "Basic" plan says "IPv6" and then "IPv4 optional" for another $2/month last I checked. So they unbundled it entirely. At least that's clear.

My budget is small but my need to host a Minecraft server for friends is unreasonable. IPv6-only was a non-starter. Ended up on Hetzner, €4.51, no regrets.

This is why I own 400 domains and use 3. Every project needs a subdomain, then the project dies, then I forget to cancel. CGNAT would save me from myself on some of these.

For anything serious I just use Cloudflare Tunnel — https://www.cloudflare.com. Zero inbound ports needed, works over CGNAT, IPv4 and IPv6 both handled. Free tier is generous.

Cloudflare in Bangalore is... inconsistent. Some evenings I see 180ms to their Singapore POP, others it's 300ms+ routing through Europe. For a tunnel that kills the experience.

I run WireGuard to a Hetzner VM in Singapore instead. 65ms stable. €6/month for the VM, but I can actually use it.

From Melbourne I see the same thing, but it's not Cloudflare's fault. Airtel and Telstra peer weirdly in Singapore. Run a traceroute, you'll probably hit Singtel then bounce to Hong Kong then back.

I keep MTR running to everything. My dreams are just ping graphs now.

For my clients in Buenos Aires, CGNAT is actually normal. Most residential ISPs have been doing it for years. The business expectation is "you want inbound, you buy a static IP."

The problem is importing that model to VPS hosting without saying so. A VPS is not residential broadband. Different contract, different expectation.
