Actually Contabo had a pricing page (back in my day, 2019 (when they were still called Contabo Hosting (not to be confused with Contabo Cloud (which was the premium brand (RIP 2021))))) where you could lock the rate if you clicked through from a specific referrer. I used `wget` (version 1.20.3, the one before they broke `--no-check-certificate` behavior) to mirror the whole site back then and the grandfather clause (section 4.2.1 of the old TOS (PDF, not the HTML version)) said "existing customers at time of announcement retain prior rate until service modification" which actually maybe still applies if you havent upgraded your plan (which you said you didnt (same specs))

I checked that PDF against my invoice history. I signed up Feb 2022, the rate lock language was already gone by then. So no grandfather for me regardless.
Still want out anyway. Even at €2.50 the CPU was trash for compiling. At €5 it's insulting.
Who's got current deals under €3 with actual CPU performance?
Hetzner CX11 is €3.79 without VAT, so over your limit, but the CPU is actual AMD EPYC. Night and day vs Contabo's decade-old Xeon.
Under €3 you're looking at BuyVM or RackNerd on sale. Both USD. BuyVM $2/mo for 512MB if you can catch stock. RackNerd had $10/year plans during their last holiday push.
Neither is winning CPU benchmarks but they won't be slower than that E5-2680v2.
With VAT in Germany that's €4.51. Way over budget.
For actual under-€3 I keep a HostHatch Stockholm Storage 500GB at $4.50/mo. Not under €3 either but the disk is fast. Their regular VPS in Singapore is $3/mo, I had one last year, CPU was AMD EPYC 7402P. Decent.
Problem is HostHatch billing is USD and their exchange rate padding hurts EUR customers.
I'm on Hetzner since 2019. The price went up once, €2.49 to €2.98 for the old CX10, but they emailed six months ahead and offered to keep old price if I committed to annual. That's how you do it.
Contabo's "surprise, double" is why I left them in 2021.
