Contabo box ≠ what I ordered—scam or config mix-up?

My homelab ate my electric bill and I would do it again. But I tried Hetzner cloud to save on AC in summer. CPX31, specs matched, but my bill had "location fee" not on page when I signed. Different fine print, same family of surprise.

Location fee? For London or St. Louis?

St. Louis. $2.50 extra. Not huge. Not on page. I asked, "where is this from," they said "datacenter surcharge." I said "where on page," they said "we will forward." Forward to same trash Petra knows.

Contabo's St. Louis is newer. Surcharge makes sense for their margin. Not putting it on page makes sense for their conversion rate. Both make sense, one is honest business, one is not.

iBGP, eBGP, don't care, just peer

Austin here. Ran ISP eleven years. The number of times we updated one page and not another—hundreds. Difference is we fixed in days when customer called, not months. Two months is not oversight, is policy of hoping nobody checks.

Following.

Asadi here. I use Hetzner auction for dedicated. Page says i7-6700, I get i7-6700. Never cloud. Maybe the lesson is cloud is where marketing lives, auction is where facts live.

This. Auction is inventory system, page is CMS. Different gods, different commandments.

So OP asked Contabo or scam, and answer is: Contabo delivers what cart says, Hetzner sometimes does not, and we are all now checking our servers at midnight. Good thread.

AddonGreen: I ordered Contabo VPS M last week, Nuremberg. 6 vCPU, 16GB, 400GB. Checked: 6, 16, 400. But `cat /proc/cpuinfo` shows AMD EPYC 7282, not 7443P they used to list. Slower core, same count. Is this lie?
