Lifetime dear skepticism: change my mind

Please help me understand why anyone trusts lifetime dears anymore. I have four dead hosts in my email history, four server gone forever. OVHcloud, RackNerd, two others I cannot even name because domain is parked now.

Yet I see people defend these dears with "survivor bias" and "most hosts are fine". Where is the proof? Show me the numbers. I am tired of paying for my optimism with data loss and migration panic at 3am.

Someone change my mind before I do something stupid again.

Nobody tracks actual failure rates properly chur. You're gambling against house odds and the house is some guy in his bedroom?

RTFM

Status: operating
Catch: annual_commitment

- 73% of "lifetime" plans sunset within 36 months
- survivors pivot to "fair use" enforcement
- your data is the real recurring revenue

Contabo was never lifetime though. They just cheap. Cheap and lifetime are different diseases.

Where does this number come from? Not challenging, actually want the source. I track this stuff and my gut says higher.

Aggregated from LET/LowEndTalk sunset threads 2019-2024. Methodology is trash, self-reported, survivor bias inverted. Real number probably worse.

This is the thing. We are all flying blind and pretending the seatbelts work. My OVHcloud dedi died in that Roubaix fire. Not even a lifetime deal, just regular OVHcloud. Still gone.

Roubaix fire was 2021. OVHcloud had no fire suppression in SBG2. Not a lifetime issue, just OVHcloud being OVHcloud. I was on SBG1, watched it happen. RAID did nothing. ZFS send to Hetzner saved me.

zfs send | zfs receive. repeat.

I use Vultr for my side projects. Not lifetime, just monthly. $6 plan. Never had an issue but I also never keep anything there I cannot rebuild in an hour.

In Brazil we do not have this "lifetime" culture. We have Pix and we pay monthly because inflation taught us. The American dream of pay once forever is funny to watch.
