This is a standard upsell pattern. I have reviewed the Terms of Service for twelve providers in this segment. The relevant clauses:

  • Hostinger: 30-day migration notice required, Section 14.3
  • InterServer: auto-renewal at "prevailing rates," Section 8.1
  • Contabo: IPv4 subject to "market adjustment," Section 22.7

Your $45 rate was likely promotional. The $189 is the rack rate. You are not obligated to accept. Consider CloudCone or HostHatch for transparent pricing. R.R.

Seriously though. 200 visitors? You need 2GB. Maybe 4GB if wordpress with plugins. The rest is padding.

My edge node: 512GB DDR5, dual epyc 9654. That is a server. Your "upgrade" is a VPS with lipstick.

Humblebrag: my home lab has more compute than most of these "dedicated" budget boxes.

That is a nice box. Draws 480W at the wall under load, 180W idle. I just decommissioned a pallet of Dell R640s, dual 6248R. 205W each at full tilt. Replaced with single EPYC 9354 nodes, 280W peak, 2.5x the throughput.

Power is now 14c/kWh at my cage. Used to be 9c. That is why your cheap dedi went away. The host eats the power hike for one contract cycle, then reprices.

Shipping: R640 pallet, 42U, 800kg, Denver to Chicago, $1,400 freight. New gear comes flat-packed, half the weight. Old iron is a boat anchor.

This is exactly the transparency gap. We ran error budget analysis on our infra spend last quarter. IPv4 cost variance was 340% of forecast. No blameless postmortem possible because the provider would not share their lease renegotiation timeline. We had to treat it as opaque external dependency, like weather.

Transparency from upstream would have let us reserve addresses 18 months ahead. Instead we ate a 4am page when the billing alert fired. Not the SRE way. Transparency. Please.

Question: who here runs bgp with own asn in apac? Considering APNIC transfer. Cost per IP higher but power lower. Break even where?

My edge: 2 server, 10G each, 64GB. Enough for 50k daily. No need 512GB.
