Semantic precision matters: "we read tickets daily" is technicall

This is exactly it. I had a similar run-in with OVHcloud last year where "24/7 monitoring" turned out to mean they got paged on weekends but only acted if the whole datacenter went dark. Single-site outages waited until Monday.

The pre-sales test is smart but honestly most students don't think to do it. Sarah, if you can get a partial refund, RackNerd at least labels their tiers "business hours" versus "priority" so you know what you're buying.

Wilma, for your nephew's setup, does he have the store using a specific payment gateway module? Some of those tie to the server IP and break if you move without updating the API credentials. Might be worth asking him before you migrate.

Late to this but

is the real takeaway. I did the same Sunday 2 AM test on RackNerd before moving a client site and their human reply came in 11 minutes. Still on them two years later.

For anyone else reading later: always check if "24/7" means "someone is awake" or "we promise to reply." Two totally different contracts.

InterServer averaged 31 hours. Hetzner hit 4 hours.

Did you test Hostinger by any chance? Curious where we landed on that list. We do try to keep weekend tickets under 6 hours but honestly I don't have the aggregate numbers in front of me.

For what it's worth most hosts will prorate a refund if you push for it, especially if you cite the response time gap. Doesn't fix the weekend but it might help with the budget stress

Four hours on a weekend is actually solid. Did you test HostHatch by any chance? Curious how my own provider stacks up, though I guess I'd rather not know.

My nephew set it up and hes at uni now.

This is the real nightmare scenario. Hope you find a host with a decent migration service. Some of them will move you for free if you ask before signing up.

Olya that's a smart protocol but who has three weekends to burn before a deadline

I jumped from InterServer to Hetzner six months back after the same Saturday black hole, no regrets so far but I also haven't stress-tested them at 3 AM on a bank holiday

Wilmaethqn44 if your nephew used a standard WooCommerce setup the payment gateway config usually ports clean, the scary part is SSL cert timing

To answer my own cliffhanger from last week: "we read tickets daily" is technically 24/7 if someone is assigned to the queue, even if they don't reply.

Same thing happened to me with a "24/7" host

Which host? If you're comfortable naming them, it helps build the dataset. I've got a spreadsheet going for the next round of tests.

Wilma — GreenCloudVPS's pre-sales desk answered me in 6 hours on a Sunday but that was October. No idea if holiday staffing holds.

Oh wow thanks for testing that olya. 31 hours average is... not what I pictured when I read 24/7.

Did you ever end up switching away from InterServer or did you find a workaround for urgent stuff? I still have like 8 months left on my plan but I'm wondering if I should eat the cost.

Sorry for the late reply, thread went quiet and I stopped checking.

Sorry to bump an old thread but

Hit me right in the chest. I did the same pre-sale test olya suggested on RackNerd and HostHatch last year. RackNerd answered in 20 minutes at 3am on a Sunday but the actual support quality when I had a real issue was... not 20 minutes of good, let's say. HostHatch took 6 hours but fixed it in one reply.

This is the part that gets me. InterServer's terms used to say something about 24/7 support coverage which sounds like someone is there, but from memory I think their SLA had business hours only for non-critical stuff.

I moved a client to HostHatch last spring after the same thing. Their pre-sales chat at 3am actually connected to a human in about six minutes. Not saying they're perfect but the words matched the reality.

Did anyone ever hear back from InterServer about what "24/7" actually means in their contract.

14 days late but this thread is too relatable to pass up.

That pre-sales test is smart but there's a catch I learned the hard way. Pre-sales teams and support teams are sometimes totally separate pools. Hetzner answered my 3 AM sales question in 20 minutes, then my actual outage ticket took 19 hours because it got routed to a different queue.

The real hack is checking if they publish an actual SLA with penalties. None of the budget ones do, obviously. But some will at least put "initial response within X hours" in the TOS which is slightly harder to weasel out of than marketing copy.

Did anyone ever follow up on the GreenCloudVPS question? Moving a shop with active payment processing before christmas sounds like a nightmare scenario.

reported. resolved. repeat.
