Contabo killed my NAT VPS network with rsync, now SSH hangs · VPS Hosting

Did you ever get that box back online, or did Contabo just flatten it

I ran into the same brick wall on a OVHcloud NAT plan a while back—their panel kept flashing "running" while the network underneath was completely torched, had to open a ticket to get them to flip the port

RackNerd billing story that still makes me twitch · General Discussion

I have seen this exact pattern before. It is almost always the processor maintaining a stale token. The bank sees an approval code and assumes validity. RackNerd sees the same approval and assumes the bank verified. Neither party audits the expiration date properly. The customer suffers; -- Sebastia...

The muted channel graveyard is too real. I have eleven.

I keep exactly three channels unmuted and route everything else through a KnownHost webhook that filters by price-per-core and region

The rest go to a muted archive I c...

The on-call rotation will destroy it by November

I achieved something similar in 2019. It lasted six months. The semicolon in my circadian rhythm was a weekend pager. Now I use blue light filters. They help marginally. The real fix was refusing 2 AM deployments. This is cont...

Dual-stack but IPv4 is CGNAT: what's even the point? · VPS Hosting

LAZY23 said:
Contabo never called it "outbound-only v4" though, did they?

No they didn't, and that's the rub. In payments we have to label everything—interchange++, scheme fees, the lot. Hosting gets away with "dual-stack" meaning "one and a half stacks" because there's no regulator lookin...

Contabo killed my NAT VPS network with rsync, now SSH hangs · VPS Hosting

I have seen this exact behavior. It is almost always a bandwidth trigger on shared upstream. The provider does not kill the interface. They shape or drop your traffic at their edge router. You are still sending packets into the void. SSH cannot complete the handshake. The solution is always rate-lim...

They offered me a free month to not post my review · Reviews

I had a similar experience with RackNerd. They offered six months on a "partner ecosystem" tier. I declined and posted anyway. The thread was buried within hours. Make of that what you will; -- Samantha

Hit my 10TB bandwidth cap on day 17 · Dedicated Servers

Same thing nearly happened to me on Hetzner Cloud. Their console shows traffic but only updates every few hours. I set up bandwhich on my instances, real-time TUI. Good for spotting runaway processes.

Also check your backups. rclone to Backblaze B2 was my culprit, not user traffic.

Looking for a sport I can do while servers compile · Off Topic

I have tried grip trainers. They are fine for brief intervals but the forearm fatigue becomes distracting during longer builds. I switched to a small under-desk pedal machine. It is surprisingly effective. You can maintain a slow cadence while reviewing output. No shoes required. I keep it tucked be...

Reading MTR output like a network engineer · General Discussion

Ana_mad. Your guide is helpful. But I found one subtle issue. You said "only last hop matters". This is mostly true. However if penultimate hop drops packets that never reach last hop. You will see loss at both. But if last hop shows zero loss. The intermediate loss is indeed noise. The exception is...
