Finally fixed my sleep schedule

Twenty years in this business. Back when pagers woke you at 3 AM and you were grateful for the work. Kids these days complain about Slack notifications.

Three months now. In bed by 23:00. Up at 06:30. No exceptions. Mark my words, the on-call rotation will destroy it by November. But the attempt mattered. Back when I started, nobody talked about sleep hygiene. We just drank worse coffee and accepted the damage.

I achieved something similar in 2019. It lasted six months. The semicolon in my circadian rhythm was a weekend pager. Now I use blue light filters. They help marginally. The real fix was refusing 2 AM deployments. This is controversial;

The alarm was gentle. No red bubbles. No escalation chains. You could sleep through a non-critical page and nobody died. My sleep was better then. The hardware mattered.

We find that consistency matters more than duration. I tried the same in January. We had good results for five weeks. Then a regional outage reset our progress. We started again. The second attempt is easier. Sam

Have you tried a separate phone for on-call? I feel you on the 3 AM trauma. The 'dumb' question is why we keep one device for alerts and nothing else. Gently correcting: your brain learns which sound means real emergency vs notification. I feel you. The attempt is the win.

builds at 3AM, sleeps at noon
