My build pipeline averages 12-18 minutes per run and I sit way too much. I want something I can pick up and put down without changing shoes or showering after. YMMV but I have found grip trainers awkward to use while reading logs. Take it with a grain of salt, maybe there is no good answer and I should just accept my fate of becoming one with the chair.
What do you all do during longer builds? IMO even a little movement adds up.
I keep a balance board beneath my standing desk; it requires no special attire and demands minimal focus once the body adjusts. The machines do not care if one sways gently while they compile. I have observed that the slight motion keeps the mind alert during lengthy build cycles.
I have tried grip trainers. They are fine for brief intervals but the forearm fatigue becomes distracting during longer builds. I switched to a small under-desk pedal machine. It is surprisingly effective. You can maintain a slow cadence while reviewing output. No shoes required. I keep it tucked beside my chair.
