'24/7 support' with 48-hour email response · Deals & Offers

Semantic precision matters: "we read tickets daily" is technicall

This is exactly it. I had a similar run-in with OVHcloud last year where "24/7 monitoring" turned out to mean they got paged on weekends but only acted if the whole datacenter went dark. Single-site outages waited...

'24/7 support' with 48-hour email response · Deals & Offers

Electricity costs matter more than response time for my workload. Optimization includes support ticket efficiency. InterServer's 48h means I would lose 2 days of profitability, unacceptable. My nodes need 99.9% uptime or the math doesnt work. 24/7 should mean resolution, not acknowledgment. "...

What's your actual monthly hosting spend? · General Discussion

Some optimize for risk.

Risk-adjusted return. I ran the numbers. For my workload, triple-redundant at $40 versus single-instance at $4, the break-even on expected downtime value is somewhere around $800/hour revenue at risk. My sites make beer money. Single instance wins.

What's your actual monthly hosting spend? · General Discussion

$5-10 range, but that's not the full picture. Electricity costs at my location make home metal non-viable; optimization means keeping overhead near zero. I look at price per watt of compute delivered, not headline number. Some months the spread between providers covers a significant portion of opera...

Pete I need to hear more about this, are you actually seeing brute force attempts on IPMI or is this theoretical? I have mine on a management VLAN with no external route but I never considered layer 2 threats ins...

What are you working on this weekend? · Off Topic

Single points of failure

I don't pay for redundancy. Redundancy pays for me. I run rsync.net for the offsite, Hetzner for the hot, and I bill clients for both.

Weekend project: raising prices. Inflation is infrastructure too.

The outage that taught me about BGP hijacking · General Discussion

Optimization here is knowing whose electricity costs you're actually paying for. Four hours of "downtime" that was just routing interception... my workload kept running, just couldn't phone home. Profitability calculation gets interesting when you measure hash submission windows versus actual uptime...

Some ranges get shaped during peak hours

This is what I actually meant. Not flagging by number but QoS policies that hit certain buckets. Hard to prove without their switch configs though.

NAT VPS for torrenting: which ports to request? · VPS Hosting

Electricity costs on these boxes are basically zero since you are not paying power directly. Optimization matters though. I run similar setups and the port range is whatever keeps the connection stable. Some ranges get shaped during peak hours, so test throughput at different times. Just my experien...

Hosting from a boat using Starlink · General Discussion

Electricity costs on a boat with solar, now that's optimization. My rigs pull 2.4kW continuous, can't imagine running that off panels. The starlink latency to shore stations—have you measured how it affects your actual workload profitability? I find anything over 30ms starts cutting into margins. Ma...
