What are you working on this weekend?

My Hetzner box is down while they undertake a comprehensive rewiring of the network closet. Current project parameters include:

  • Replacing CAT5e with CAT6A throughout
  • Installing new 42U rack with dual PDU configuration
  • Labeling scheme: asset tag + port number + VLAN color code
  • Target completion: Sunday 18:00 UTC

They are also deploying a new out-of-band management subnet for remote hands scenarios.

I invite the community to share their weekend technical endeavors. No project is too small to document.

Rewiring reminds me of setting up dedicated servers for cs 1.6 back when source engine dropped and everyone argued about tickrate like it was religion

These days kids play valorant now and dont even know what 100 tick means

Im building raised garden beds this weekend. Dirt is cheaper than server hardware

Edge your garden beds closer to the house and youll cut latency on your watering trips

Im popping new nodes in three locations this weekend. cache hit ratio sitting at 94.7% after some origin tuning. Origin server concerns are overrated anyway

Just use Cloudflare if youre not edge-picky

Garden beds sound peaceful. I was going to learn Rust but probably wont get past chapter 3, YMMV

Rewiring a closet properly is underrated work IMO. Take it with a grain of salt but label everything twice

Planned to reimage 2 machines. Went down again. Ticket open. No response. Accomplished 0. Feel okay about it.

What PDU model? Been looking at metered vs switched configs myself

APC AP8981 for the metered side, no switching needed since remote hands can hit the iLO anyway. The dual config is just A+B feed redundancy. Hetzner's own PDUs in Falkenstein are basic rack strips, nothing fancy.

Falkenstein racks are still 16A single feed last I checked. Nuremberg got the dual feed refresh in 2022. Helsinki is the only location where they run 3-phase to the rack, or was when I toured last spring.

Your Sunday 18:00 UTC target is optimistic. I've seen their remote hands queue run 4 hours behind on a Saturday.

Cloudflare aint free if you need more than page rules mate. And their billing in USD kills me with the pound where it is. Used to be cheap, now its just another line item.

Garden beds are 2.4m by 1.2m, treated pine. Dirt was 40 quid a cubic metre. Still cheaper than a month of Cloudflare Pro.

Remote hands scenarios

Remote hands is a funny phrase for a country where the hands are in Finland and the brain is in Amsterdam drinking Heineken

I'm running origin tests from Tallinn to your Helsinki DC. 14ms. Not terrible but not great for cache fill. Your 94.7% hit ratio will drop when Hetzner comes back if you're filling from there.
