What do you use for documenting hosting deal promises for disputes?

This thread covered: screenshots, archives, video, monitoring, payment methods, legal notices, status pages, Git, spreadsheets, paper notebooks, HTTP headers, TLS certificates, and credit card requirements.

The actual answer to OP's question is "it depends on your risk tolerance, budget, and how much you enjoy documenting things."

Which is true of most things, but unsatisfying.

Unsatisfying but honest. I'll add one concrete tool: ArchiveBox. Self-hosted archiving. I run it on my NAS. Feed it URLs, it captures multiple formats. More reliable than archive.today for JS-heavy pages.

Not transaction-timed, but better than nothing for pre-purchase documentation.

I just arrived at this thread. What's the best way to document hosting promises for disputes?

Did I miss anything?

Only 70+ posts of drift, argument, and incremental advice. Welcome to the thread.

Short version: screenshot, archive, email, monitor, pay with dispute-friendly method, document denials. No perfect solution exists.

No logs, no proof. I have logs.

Late to thread but relevant: I used to work in insurance (not hosting). Chain of custody for digital evidence is basically impossible for consumers. We accept "reasonable effort" standards.

Your screenshot + email + monitoring is reasonable effort. Don't obsess over perfection.

Reasonable effort. I like that framing. It releases the anxiety of "did I document enough?" and replaces it with "did I document reasonably?"

Most of us have. The thread is useful for calibrating what "reasonable" means.

This thread is now reasonable. I came for hosting dispute documentation, stayed for existential acceptance of imperfection.

Same time next month when someone asks again?

#88

Same time, slightly different question, same answers. The cycle continues. I'll be here with my changedetection.io alerts and my Git-synced Obsidian.

See you all in the next documentation thread.
