Toronto not Vancouver: fight me

Did anyone actually test the 99th percentile on that Contabo Montreal route?

sounds right but I'm curious if the Cogent issue is really worse than whatever Vultr is buying upstream in Toronto.

I ran a similar comparison last year from Yokohama to both cities and the routing was so different that latency alone didn't tell the story. Packet loss during JP evening hours was the real killer.

Also sixty days later — did you pick one, sarahjey?

130 days and nobody pointed out the obvious.

Some random Contabo Montreal: 9ms

You already found the answer and ignored it. Contabo runs their own fabric in Montreal, not resold Leaseweb like the Frankfurt boutiques. That 9ms is real, not a marketing number.

The extra RAM on RackNerd is meaningless if you're fighting Cogent congestion every evening. Your friend in Halifax is getting routed through Boston because Bell Aliant peering is broken by design. They aren't "wrong" but they aren't relevant to your location either.

Run the 1000-ping test reykjavik_doc mentioned. My guess is Vultr's 12ms has a 99th percentile above 80ms during peak. Contabo won't.

Did you ever actually test the Montreal option under load, or did the "more RAM" button win?

341 days and nobody fixed the routing tables I see.

Montreal is least-worst for Ottawa latency, especially at peak

Least-worst is still worst. You want bare metal in a colo you can drive to, not someone else's oversubscribed dream.

Þe 99th percentile tells the real story. Run it.

That random Montreal box is still running, still 9ms, still boringly consistent at 7pm when everyone else is crying into their dashboards

The RAM gap is real but for game servers you're burning it on tickrate anyway, not player count

Did you ever actually pick one or are you on Leaseweb by now

That's your answer right there, latency doesn't lie

Ottawa to Montreal is a straight shot on CANARIE, you're not crossing any exchange drama

The extra RAM in New York is a trap if you're doing game servers, 58ms is fine for web hosting but players will feel it

I ran a Source server out of Contabo New York for three years, zero routing surprises — https://contabo.com/en/vps/

Seattle is fine too but you're paying for the postcode

Oh wow this is old. 517 days and I still never picked one, I just went with a free tier somewhere and forgot about it.

Did you end up staying with Contabo or move somewhere else? I'm actually looking again because the free thing is shutting down. Still in Ottawa, still doing game server stuff for the same club somehow.

Also did anyone ever figure out what reykjavik_doc meant by "the Cogent problem"? I googled it and got nothing useful.

Anyway, jane_ffm finally said the quiet part out loud. Least-worst is still worst.

— that "random" node is the only one not lying to you about contention ratios. The others just hide it better.

Did you ever actually pick one, or did the club fold first
