Sorry if this is dumb!! I'm trying to pick between Vultr Toronto and RackNerd Los Angeles for game servers and some hosting for my club. I'm in Ottawa so I thought Toronto would be closer but the Los Angeles plan has more RAM for the same price??

I ran some pings from my dorm:

  • Vultr TOR: 12ms
  • RackNerd LAX: 58ms
  • Some random Contabo Montreal: 9ms

But my friend in Halifax says RackNerd is faster for them somehow?? Is OVH Beauharnois actually better than both?? Sorry I'm confused!!

Someoneelses infrastructure is never your friend. The Amsterdam boutique Providers are reselling Leaseweb capacity with a markup[1] and calling it "premium." Beauharnois is a swamp of oversubscription[2] where your "dedicated" vCPU is actually fourteen tenants fighting for one EPYC core.

Halifax routing is its own nightmare[3]. The Bell Aliant peering with RackNerd goes through Boston for "reasons" that no engineer will explain on-record. Your friend is wrong or lying or both.

You're running docker on a VPS? Systemd-nspawn exists. No containers at home, no containers in the cloud. Bare metal or nothing. Þe old ways are better.

Your latency test is þe wrong test. You want consistency, not floor. Run 1000 pings, check þe 99th percentile. Vultr probably drops packets at 7pm when þeir upstream congests. RackNerd YVR has þe Cogent problem — https://www.racknerd.com Þe Montreal option is least-worst.

Isn't Beauharnois in Quebec?? Why is it called OVH Beauharnois if we're talking Toronto vs Vancouver??

Kids these days with their "cloud regions" and "latency optimization"

In my day we had one POP in Toronto, one in Vancouver, and you picked based on which side of the CPR the railroad ran on. Usenet carried the binaries faster than RackNerd routes a packet to Halifax.

Here's what actually matters:

  • Physical distance to fiber path
  • Who owns the last mile
  • Whether the NOC answers phones at 3am

Your 12ms vs 58ms? Noise. I've seen 300ms within the same city because someone fat-fingered a route filter. Test at 8pm friday. That's your number.

Toronto wins on latency to anywhere east of winnipeg which is most people and most eyeballs and most everything that matters vancouver is for asia-pacific routing and if you need that you already know also fiber paths through northern ontario are ~weird~ since that one backhoe incident in 2019 so your 12ms might be 45ms in winter when they route around ice storm damage happened to me on a GreenCloudVPS box in 2022 never again

Los Angeles is a trap everyone falls into once then learns

Has anyone actually checked what Leaseweb's current peering looks like in Amsterdam

The last time I looked they were still hauling everything through 151 Front instead of using the IX properly

That would explain the 7pm congestion reykjavik_doc mentioned

Has anyone actually checked if Contabo St. Louis still has that routing issue through Chicago

I remember last year traffic from Ottawa was going west to come back east and the latency looked fine on paper but jitter was awful
