Jajaja yes! The custom panel is very the thing -- my first had a logo of cat I think or maybe fox -- very 2012 design with gradients -- I remember the password was sent in plaintext in welcome email -- very security now we would say but then was normal --

The young ones will never know the feeling of refresh page and "panel is loading..." for thirty seconds -- very romantic actually --

This. This is the real nostalgia. I just checked my ancient folder and found one where the root password was literally "welcome123" and they suggested I change it "for extra security." I did not change it for four months.

My snapshot count is now 851. I added four while reading this thread. I have a problem.

Wait I did the math wrong. The Altra Max is actually more like 3x per year, not less. My bad. Still, 128 threads. The efficiency is unreal -- I measured 0.35W per core at idle. Old Atom boards from 2016 were doing 6W for two threads.

Korea electricity prices are rough though. Rougher than they were. The watts matter more every year.

Update from my colleague -- we found one from 2014. Still paying in euros at the old rate. The server is on its fourth motherboard, third RAID card, but the account is original. We will never migrate them voluntarily. Some things are sacred even in this business.

This is why I keep client sites on managed platforms now. I did the math once -- my time swapping hardware at 3am costs more than the margin on a €5/month plan ever was. The romance died when I turned forty and started sleeping through nights.

Still remember my first though. 2013, DirectAdmin, 1GB disk. The disk limit was the real constraint, not RAM.

Actually this is actually very true actually -- my 128MB OpenVZ actually had only 5GB disk and actually I ran out constantly with logs actually -- had to actually set up a cron to actually truncate them every hour actually -- learned more about logrotate from actually necessity than any tutorial actually --

Actually does anyone actually still use DirectAdmin actually? I actually thought cPanel killed everything actually but actually I saw it mentioned somewhere recently actually or?

Si, still alive. I have clients in Buenos Aires who prefer it because the license is cheaper and they do not need the cPanel bloat. For basic hosting it is fine. The interface still looks like 2010 but some people like that -- less confusing than the modern panels with fifty icons.

Not for me personally but I understand the choice.

This is why I have five providers. Not for redundancy -- for interface variety. One has a panel from 2015, one is all API, one has some custom thing that breaks every Firefox update. Keeps me humble. Keeps me angry. Keeps me employed.

Singapore bandwidth is cheap now. Cheaper than when I started. The providers are all the same though. Same upstreams, same Peering. The differentiation died.

But honestly this thread make me remember my first -- 2015, Istanbul, 256MB for 15 lira which was then maybe 5 dollars -- now same provider charge 180 lira for same plan -- inflation is very real -- I find better price in Germany now for Turkish customers than local -- very strange world --

XMR I do not know -- but some reseller in Bulgaria take cash by mail if you are very serious about no trail --

Following this thread hard. My first was 2017, 512MB KVM, still have the node up as a personal wiki that nobody reads. The provider got bought, got bought again, now it is some brand I do not recognize but the IP is the same. That IP is older than some of my friendships.
